Don't let the "offical" review above predispose you to disliking this album. I'm happy to say it was suprisingly good.Although I must admit it is nothing like their earlier, classic work, "Six" is pretty listenable. It has some great rhymes, some good beats and overall is a solid effort. Check it out!

THEY ARE HIP HOP LEGENDS REGARDLESS,

THIS CD WAS PRETTY GOOD I FELT. IT LACKED PROMOTION. I THOUGHT JALIL AND ECSTACY'S RYMES WERE TIGHT. CAN'T GET ENOUGH WAS WICKED
ALONG WITH LORD TARIQ AND PETER GUNZ. KEEP RUNNIN BACK MADE SOME NOISE AS WELL. I WAS SUPRISED OF THE CURSING AND DRUG TALK. IN 1986 ON GROWING UP FROM THEIR BACK IN BLACK CD , THEY WERE AGAINST DRUGS. GOOD VIDEO FOR THAT JAM AS WELL. I WISH THEIR SIX CD HAD MORE JAMS. IT SEEMS TO SHORT. IT IS OK MATERIAL. JUST DONT COMPARE IT TO ESCAPE , BACK IN BLACK , OR OPEN SESAME. THOSE WERE CLASSICS. OUTSIDE OF LL COOL J , WHAT MC'S HAVE MADE HIT RECORDS FOR TWENTY YEARS? I WILL TELL YOU ONE THING. I SAW WHODINI PERFORM IN NEW YORK CITY IN OCTOBER OF 2001 AT CLUB SHADOWS. THEY WERE ON FIRE WITH THEIR PERFORMANCE , AND STILL CAN GET DOWN WITH 20 YEARS IN THE BUSINESS. THEIR CLASSIC SONGS LIKE FREAKS COME OUT AT NIGHT , FRIENDS , 5 MINUTES OF FUNK , ONE LOVE , FUNKY BEAT , AND I'M A HO ARE TIMESLESS. I DOUBT THE RAPPERS OF TODAY CAN ROCK A CROWD LIKE WHODINI CAN. NUFF SAID! WHODINI ARE HIP HOP PIONEERS!

Whodini's So So Def LP is... so-so...,

"Six" is the sixth LP from the hip-hop trio Whodini. They were pioneers in rap music, among the top concert draws in the genre during the 1980's as well as making significant inroads at urban radio. During one of their mid-80's tours, a preadolescent Jermaine Dupri was a backup dancer. By the mid-90's, Dupri had become a much sought-after songwriter and producer in urban music (Mariah Carey, Usher), and he was even running his own imprint label at Sony/Columbia, So So Def Entertainment. In an unprecedented move, he signed Whodini, who had long-since been released from their contract at Jive, and whose previous attempt at a comeback, 1991's "Bag-A-Trix", failed miserably.
Unfortunately, despite good intentions, "Six" also failed at giving the group the full comeback that they deserved. 13 cuts deep, four are intros/interludes (which are more obnoxious than amusing), and one is a remix, so that cuts the song count down to eight. Among them, the only highlights are the lead single "Keep Running Back" (Whodini continues their romantic-rap vibe over a Cherrelle sample) and the follow-up "Be My Lady" (which samples R. Kelly). Elsewhere, the guys play catch-up with gangster rap a little, which is slightly disappointing since Whodini were never known for that ("Can't Get Enough", "Still Want More" and "If You Want It" feature a then-unknown Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz as co-lyricists/performers). To the producer's credit, Dupri directly handles most of the songs here, but he more or less phones in the job; little here has the funk-kick of his historical body of work with artists like Da Brat, Kriss Kross or MC Lyte. Considering that Dupri was/is the South's answer to Sean "Puffy" Combs, it is incredible that he couldn't work his magic for the group. In short, this is an under-whelming album, and not remotely among the group's best work. The recent hits-compilation "Funky Beat" includes "Keep Running..."; it's a great starter set for the Whodini curious. Otherwise, buy this from cutout bins only. |
