This is not a traditional biography, but rather an insight into Johnny's life, especially at the beginning of his music career as lead singer of The Crests. Johnny was among the first generation of teenagers to embrace the new music of the 1950s, called rock and roll. His dream was to someday be on stage, entertaining audiences with his style of music, which was vocal group harmony (now called doo wop). He achieved that success with The Crests and their song "16 Candles", which is still played today at Sweet Sixteen birthday parties. A decade later, he achieved success with a jazz/rock group, The Brooklyn Bridge. It's very rare for a lead singer to enjoy that kind of success with two different groups, in different decades and with different genres of music. There are no scandals or secrets revealed in this book. Johnny Maestro was a quiet, humble family man, admired by his peers and fans alike. What the reader will learn is that Johnny was also a great humanitarian, giving generously of his time and talent to many worthwhile causes. March 24, 2012 will mark two years since Johnny passed away, and this book is something to treasure, along with his records and videos. Johnny's legacy is the magnificent voice that he left to the world--a voice to be heard by generations to come.

A wonderful well written book about Johnny Maestro-a true effort of love admiration. I truly enjoyed every 49 pages of this book. This was just enough for me to capture the true spirit of Johnny Maestro. Prior to picking up this book I only knew that Johnny Maestro was the lead singer of the Crests. This book provides details about the wonderful and exciting career of this man. The author includes very enduring thoughts from Life-long fans and Johnny's niece. This book shines a wonderful bright light on his man's life. This is a tribute book by a woman who truly has a love and passion for Johnny not only as an artist and humanitarian but as a human being. I love the collection of photographs. It seems in this industry the norm is when celebrities pass on authors take the opportunity to bring up scandals and dirt to deface the legacy for their own profit. Ms. Brodsky highlights the positive light and accomplishment with this effort should be applauded. I am sure Johnny Maestro is looking down from heaven with a smile on his face over this book. Kudos!

As other reviewers have stated, this is not your typically biography, which I found refreshing and hope there might be a follow-up book about Johnny's entire life. I enjoyed the fan letters and getting the chance to read about Johnny through the eyes of his niece. It's the sort of book that you can keep on your coffee table to flip through the pictures, read one of the letters and most importantly, share with other fans of the great Johnny Maestro! This is a must read for all of his fans.

Nice tribute to a great performer but I was looking for a biography about his entire life from birth to the end. I read the entire book in about 15 minutes.
