5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you are looking for in an historical romance January 25, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
When I turned the last page of Regina Jennings debut novel, Sixty Acres and a Bride, I was reminded of a quote from one of my favorite authors, Jane Austen: "but for my own part, if a book is well written, I always find it too short."

So true, Jane. The story of Rosa, Weston, and their close-knit families of post Civil War Texas was my favorite kind of read: great characters that felt like family, a vivid setting, and historical detail that fully immersed me in the story while discreetly avoiding the history lecture. The characters' deep faith--a faith that kept them both grounded and conflicted--was never preachy or contrived.

Regina laid out the strands of her story--family obligations, cultural differences, an evil villain, and a heartfelt romance--then deftly wove them together in a way that kept me fearing and hoping for her hero and heroine until the last page was turned.

Sixty Acres was a multi-layered read that will leave you satisfied on every level except one. It was too short. Luckily, I have it on good authority that Regina has two more historical romances on their way, and I daresay they will be equally well-written. Regina, Jane would be pleased.

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delightful Fiction! February 5, 2012
Format:Paperback
"Sixty Acres and a Bride" is a stories I as a reader finds great pleasure is spending time with. And at the close of such a novel, I'm a bit sorry to see it come to an end.

I adore Rosa. She is so earnest and tries so hard, but so often it backfires on her. It was comical and yet I had to feel a bit sad for her, trying to learn to live in a foreign culture from her native Mexico. She's a character one can't help but love, because her yearnings and love for life is so infectious. I wanted to join the pages of the novel and become her closest friend.

Weston is the epitome of the cowboy hero and I loved his pure heart - though he wasn't without his faults! The depth of his backstory has wreaked havoc on his present and I wanted to see him free of those bonds. And ah the romance certainly helped with that!

The story explores the beloved plot of Ruth and Boaz in my favorite era - western expansion on the Texas plains.

It's written in such a way that I felt I truly grew to know and love these characters. Words paint vivid pictures and I loved every single second. This novel is a treasure, one I don't plan to part with and one I'll peruse again for that lovely sigh of contentment at the end.

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the publishers through CFBA for my copy to review.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely debut February 1, 2012
Format:Paperback
Sixty Acres and a Bride, Regina Jennings' lovely historical debut novel,is the kind of story I love best---filled with well-rounded characters that capture your imagination from the opening pages.
Her portrayal of Rosa and Weston and their strong familial ties is heartfelt and moving, and she convincingly captures the atmosphere of post-bellum Texas. A warm and satisfying read.
