Book Description

April 2008
These scenes take place in the confines of school and are easily staged. The incredibly believable teen characters are daring, outlandish, uninhibited and creative as they deal with situations exaggerated by their own attitudes, perceptions and actions. The scenes focus on subjects they know very well - dating, appearances, egos, fads, crushes, breaking rules, broken hearts, failing grades, embarrassing moments and much more. These are realistic scenes that help the teen audience and performers laugh at themselves. They are perfect for classroom practice or an evening of entertainment.

More About the Author

Laurie Allen is a West Texas playwright who was drawn to the theatre during her teen years at Snyder High School while performing plays under the legendary Jerry P. Worsham. As this influential director led his students to a record setting state championships in UIL one-act play competitions, he taught these small town students they could achieve any dream they longed for, whether it was in the theatre or beyond. So, after graduating, she decided to combine her love for the theatre and her passion to write, and try her hand at writing a play. Her first play, Gutter Girl, won the Indian River Players One-Act Play Competition. And at that moment she was hooked, knowing she had found the place where she belonged. Now, over twenty-five of her plays for adults and teens have been published by various publishers. Her plays for teens have enjoyed wide success across the United States with several of her high school competition pieces succeeding in the National Speech & Forensics Competitions.

2.0 out of 5 stars Duets for middle-schoolers, June 15, 2008
By
This review is from: Sixty Comedy Duet Scenes for Teens: Real-Life Situations for Laughter (Paperback)

The book is organized by male-male, female-female, and male-female scenes. A few might be long enough for forensic competitions, but most would be more useful in the classroom as practice pieces for a beginning drama class.

Though the topics would be familiar to teens, the feel of each scene is repetitious. The characterization is not very strong; most of the characters sound exactly alike, and there are very few opportunities for strong emotional choices. The characters drawn are stereotypical teens without depth, and the cultural focus is extremely narrow centering around middle-class, Caucasian students. Because of the previously mentioned failings, the book would be better suited for middle school students in beginning drama or communication classes. English classes could use the book as a springboard to journals or other topics middle-schoolers would want to discuss.

This is useful for anyone needing to find dialogue for a presentation, competition, or just for fun in class. Teens sometimes have difficutly finding scenes to present and this is a great resource.
