2.0 out of 5 stars Of marketing tactics, hunting down reviewers, and -- oh yes -- this book
My own thoughts about this book, as well as the icky story of how it is I happened to receive it, follow. But first I want to make some observations about the reviews here.

For as few sales as this book has had (see its sales rank), there are an astonishing number of reviews. Notice that a number come from "Vine Voices," people who participate in a program in...

This review is from: Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything (Hardcover)
In a gentle, quiet Foreword Caroline Myss serves as a guide to the reader who may pick up this small but significant book with her thoughts that 'the most meaningful events that have shaped our lives have, by far, been the smallest and the subtlest.' That introduction serves Phil Bolsta's SIXTY SECONDS: ONE MOMENT CHANGES EVERYTHING well for it provides the thread that ties these 45 collected moments shared by a wide variety of thinking people into a memorable, valuable reminder that life as we are living it is precious, that no matter how raw times become or challenging events can be, there is that single moment that can change our vision if only we are vulnerable and sensitive to notice.

Bolsta introduces each section of this book (1. Glimpses into the Unknown: life-and-death moments; mysterious moments 2. Living Life: heartbreaking moments; sacred moments 3. Insightful Incidents: life-altering moments, moments of enlightenment) with brief synopses of his own philosophy and then gives a brief background for each of the highly regarded people who agreed to share their particular moments that changed their lives. As the section divisions suggest these 'moments' can be the result of encountering trauma, fear, near death episodes, or simply those happenstance frozen moments in time where the words or deeds of strangely appropriate individuals arrested the attention of the writer and quietly but inexplicably altered the path or journey through this life.

For some readers this collection of moments may feel too grounded in Western religious explanations. But the experiences shared by these 45 'changed people' cannot help but raise our awareness of the 'spiritual' presence that accompanies these changes - and that 'spiritual presence' can be called by any name for any preference. The messages are still poignant and reassuring in our lives that at times seem to lack meaning. Grady Harp, July 08

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharing Intimate moments -, May 1, 2008
This review is from: Sixty Seconds (Kindle Edition)
I couldn't put this book down when I started reading it. SIXTY SECONDS: ONE MOMENT CHANGES EVERYTHING tells us very inspirational moments of many well known individuals. - forty five to be exact. It includes personal stories from people of different walks of life, such as physicians, authors of well known books, film producers, sports legends, educators, philosophers, etc. There are intimate stories from Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Dr. Deepak Chopra, Gregg Braden, Dr. Christine Northrup, Neale Donald Walsch, Caroline Myss , Dr. Larry Dossy, Dr. Dean Ornish , and Dr. Bernie Siegel - just to name a few.

Reading about so many people who have had huge life-changing events makes me feel like I can handle anything that comes my way. Things really do happen for a reason! I've never understood why some people don't believe in an afterlife - or why they don't see the miracles that happen each and every day. The stories in this book have actually happened!

I can't imagine the time and effort expended in gathering all of the stories, putting it in a book format, getting it published and getting the word out to the public. I thank Phil Bolsta, Caroline Myss, and all the many people involved in this wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Change someone's life and your own in the space of a minute, July 16, 2008
This review is from: Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything (Hardcover)
This is a book of stories, rather like "Chicken Soup for the Soul" where people share their personal experiences who their lives or the lives of people around them changed in literally the blink of an eye. Authors include Wayne Dyer, Dean Ornish, Marilyn Diamond, and Deepak Chopra.

But my favorite story was from a hairdresser that had a client come in between her usual times for a styling. When the hair stylist asked about any special occasion, the client said "Oh, I just want to look and feel good tonight." After a scalp massage, a haircut and a lot of laughing and sharing, the client left. And then had her sister check her into a mental health facility, because the reason she was getting her hair done was because she was going to commit suicide that night, and she wanted to look good at her funeral. How sobering! By being fun, entertaining, caring and "there" for his client, the stylist actually saved her life.

The other story I loved is one of a doctor who volunteered for a spate in Nigeria. While there, he did a risky procedure to remove fluid around the heart of a young farmer. After some touch-and-go moments, the procedure was a success. When the doctor came back later to see his patient, the farmer said the most extraordinary thing: "I get the sense you are wondering why you came here." --How did he know, thought the doctor. "I have an answer for you" went on the farmer, "You came here for one reason. You came here for me." The doctor realized he was there, anywhere, to help ONE PERSON AT A TIME. After he had gotten over a very grandiose viewpoint of his own importance, the farmer set down the significance of what he was doing. Helping one other person, one at a time. Very profound.

This is a terrific book about life's purpose and our place in it. A very inspiring book to read and I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, May 4, 2008
This review is from: Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything (Hardcover)
I loved this book! It's wonderful to read about the well known people and the events that changed the directions of their lives. While each person writes his or her own story, Phil Bolsta begins each section with an insightful synopsis of the types of events that have occurred. The stories show the reader how this can happen to each one of us and all we need to do is be aware of events that surround us in order for a spiritual transformation to take place. They sometimes come in soft quiet moments and others like thunderbolts. Don't miss this wonderful collection of events that have happened to the famous, but show us they can happen to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book that Will Change Your LIfe, June 23, 2008
This review is from: Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything (Hardcover)
Phil was our first customer. He drove down from Minnesota to visit some friends. He stopped by our restaurant the day before we opened and we spent a wonderful afternoon getting to know him. He told us about his soon-to-be-published book, Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything, a book he'd put together of short, inspirational stories as told by some of today's greatest thinkers. Everyone's had that special someone in their life that has inspired them. Maybe someone told you a story from their life that deeply changed your own life. Experiences that changed them suddenly reaching out across the telling and changing you through the power of their words and the feelings behind them.

Kathy and I had watched the movie, The Secret, 90 days in a row and, to test the concepts in the movie, we had written a goal to manifest a raw food restaurant within 6 months.

Suddenly, the day before we opened, a person appears who'd listened to the inspirational stories of all these people and compiled them in a book.

The publisher of his book is the same publisher who'd published the book The Secret, which the movie was based off.

After all the amazing series of events that had led two unemployed people with virtually no money to their name to find themselves in the restaurant that they'd ordered from the catalog of the Universe," now, yet another "sign" appears.

A few months later, we asked Phil to come to our restaurant after his book was published. About 12 people sat around tables at the front of the restaurant and listened to Phil read from his book.

Afterwards, almost everyone bought a copy.

Phil came into Kathy and my life right before everything changed.

Read his book.

Maybe, everything in your life is about to change...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sixty Seconds changed everything, May 4, 2008
This review is from: Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything (Hardcover)
If you were my best friend, I'd be emailing you to share a "Wow!" over Phil Bolsta's book. It's an easy read, especially nice for lunch breaks because each of the 45 stories is short. You've heard many of these names and, like me, may have wondered what is going on inside this person. Well, here's your chance to walk with each one as they relate the moment of spiritual understanding that forever altered their perception of life. Some will make you cry; one made me laugh out loud in a busy coffee shop. You may even discover the one that touches your memory and has you thinking, "I remember feeling like that!" If you're feeling spiritually alone in the universe, don't miss this book. You're in excellent company.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can 60-Second Stories offer a Manual for Living ... and Comfort?, September 30, 2008
By
Brian Emo (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything (Hardcover)
There's a pervasive and seductive belief that we can single-handedly restructure reality on our own terms, to conform to a preconceived and preferred plan of how our destiny should manifest. However, unexpected events invariably foil these well-crafted plans and thrust us in dramatically different directions - the central premise of Sixty Seconds.

Some of the Sixty-Second stories relate to pivotal and heartbreaking events, and while others are ostensibly less profound, what emerges is the truth that every moment carries significance when we awaken to the reality of its essential purpose. It's quietly listening to the inherent wisdom of the still small voice of a moment that graces us with a life-changing, liberating, and transformative opportunity - which might otherwise be overlooked or dismissed.

Sixty Seconds is a coveted invitation to a private party with 45 of the most extraordinary individuals, who share highly-personal and poignant stories of how unpredictable moments impacted their lives, forever changing them. Each storyteller's authentic voice animates an atmosphere of intimacy. I felt as though I were sharing privileged conversations with wise and trusted confidants.

But what actually renders these renowned and respected storytellers so extraordinary is their commitment to elevate their own ordinary events to a higher octave of meaning.

In addition to these magnificent, entertaining, and revealing stories, Sixty Seconds also features an elegant foreword by Caroline Myss, and wonderfully insightful commentary by Phil Bolsta that introduces each group of stories throughout the book.

Simply put, Sixty Seconds delivers a master class in wisdom that belies the simplicity of its humble title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting collection of life-changing experiences, July 28, 2008
This review is from: Sixty Seconds: One Moment Changes Everything (Hardcover)
In this book, author Phil Bolsta has assembled an amazing collection of people--from well-known names such as spiritual medium James Van Praagh, bestselling author Dr. Dean Ornish, and alternative medicine guru Dr. Deepak Chopra to lesser-known mystics, sports figures, authors, and entertainers--to share stories of moments that changed their lives. The idea behind Sixty Seconds is that these moments, which may consume only mere seconds of our lives, are not only sacred but often transformative. In his introduction, Bolsta suggests that these transformative experiences lead to dramatic changes in how people view themselves, the world, and the meaning and purpose of life.

Bolsta has organized the book into three parts. Part I, Glimpses into the the Unknown, includes both "Life-and-Death Moments" and "Mysterious Moments." This section contains some of the most "out there" stories of the book, as it includes tales of visions, spirits, and angels. Part II is entitled Living Life, and it is broken down into "Heartbreaking Moments" and "Sacred Moments." As the title of the first subsection would suggest, these are some of the saddest stories of the book, but they are also some of the most moving; much of the second subsection involves transitions between life and death. The final part of the book is Insightful Incidents, which includes "Life-Altering Moments" and "Moments of Enlightenment."

I definitely found these stories to be both interesting and thought-provoking. Most are short, from only 2-3 pages to a bit longer. However, the title "Sixty Seconds" is a bit misleading, as some of the transformative "moments" actually took place over the course of days or weeks. Still, this is definitely a worthwhile read, especially for someone who is exploring personal/spiritual growth and who enjoys reading about the journeys of others.
