Biography

Fourteen-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Ricky Skaggs’ career is easily among the most significant in recent country music history. If Skaggs’ burgeoning trophy case full of
awards wasn’t already enough evidence of that fact, consider that legendary guitarist Chet Atkins once credited Skaggs with “single-handedly saving country music.” His life’s path has ... Read more in Amazon's Ricky Skaggs Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Several styles of Christmas song, from bluegrass to hymns September 29, 2011
Format:Audio CD
------------------------------------------------------
Ricky Skaggs
"A Skaggs Family Christmas, v.2"
(Skaggs Family, 2011)
-------------------------------------------------------
Bandleader Ricky Skaggs is one of the preeminent contemporary bluegrass stars, and he is also a born-again fundamentalist with impressive bona fides as a Christian musician. Here, he mixes several religious music styles on this joyful live holiday album. There are straightforward holiday standards, such as the album's bouncy, bluegrassy opener, "Christmas Time's A-Coming," alongside tracks that dig deeper into Biblical teachings and church-ier Southern Gospel arrangements.

Skaggs' extended family is on board, including his wife's family band, The Whites, with sisters Sharon and Cheryl and papa Buck White, as well as the new generation, Ricky and Sharon's kids Luke and Molly, as well as Cheryl's daughter Rachel Leftwich, who is apparently married to Andy Leftwich, the fiddler in Ricky's band Kentucky Thunder. This is a rock-solid record, with a solid foundation in the not-too-dour bedrock fundamentalism of the Skaggs Family clan, but also some lighter holiday fare for folks who just like to sing along. Also included is a second disc, a bonus DVD with the entire concert on it, with about three times as much music as the audio disc, and a nice chance to see not just Skaggs in action, but the often-neglected Whites as well. Happy holidays! DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Country Music)

5.0 out of 5 stars CD & DVD have memorable music & superior talent October 13, 2011
By J. Ross
Format:Audio CD
As families gather for the holidays, I'd love to have the extended Skaggs Family joyously singing and playing live in our home. The next best thing, "A Skaggs Family Christmas Volume Two" includes both a ten-track CD of both live and studio recordings, and a bonus DVD with 26 songs. The CD features a combination of seasonal favorites (such as an a cappella live trio rendition of "The First Noel" and gospel quartet arrangement of "Children Go") along with new compositions (such as Luke Skaggs' instrumental "Flight to Egypt"). The contemporary "Reunion Song" is a sturdy showcase for consummate musician Ricky's vocal and multi-instrumental talents. Written by Gene MacLellan, the lyrical country number is tastefully rendered with sweet electric guitar, pedal steel, and drums in the mix. It's also a pleasure when a family album is presented in such a way that all members of the clan can share in the performance with love and delight. Molly Skaggs demonstrates her piano and vocal proficiencies on "What Songs Were Sung," and Cheryl and Sharon White alternate lead and harmony vocals on "Light of the Stable." Featuring the next generation, Luke & Molly Skaggs and their cousin Rachel Leftwich present "Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel" with minimal guitar accompaniment and a vocal purity that is a heart of the season.

Conducted by Jim Gray, The Nashville Strings make their aurally pleasurable appearance on three cuts (Silent Night, Flight to Egypt, Joy to the World). As their fluid instrumental arrangement of "Joy to the World" closes the album, it's interesting to note how this eclectic album has covered so much territory in so little time. It ranges from the three tracks with a cappella vocalizing or minimal guitar to the sounds of an entire orchestra.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wasn't what I expected but I like it! October 17, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought this CD/DVD combo for my mom who is a die-hard bluegrass fan. She loves Skaggs and the White family. However, if you are expecting bluegrass music, you will be sadly disappointed. There is really only about 1 or 2 songs that are of that genre. The rest are classic Christmas songs both traditional and contemporary. The children of Skaggs and one of the White sisters are prominent in the DVD. All of the performers have excellent voices although the children have a long way to go to polish their speaking performances (but their singing is excellent). The children tend to say "you know" just one too many times, which for me was annoying. Skaggs is funny and tells some cute jokes on the DVD.
There are 10 songs on the CD and 26 songs on the DVD which makes this product a real bargain. It really can put one in the Christmas kind of mood. Although it was not what I expected when I purchased it and even my mom was surprised that the content was not more bluegrass, it was well worth the money and will be something that we will enjoy over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD and DVD December 26, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The CD contains a modest 10 tracks while the DVD contains over 20, including 8 songs that also appear on the CD and others that appear on the original Skaggs Family Christmas. A few things have changed since that album was released, most notably the inclusion of three younger members of the dynasty in the musical line-up.

Having not included it on their earlier album, it was almost inevitable that Christmas time's a-coming (a bluegrass classic that has also been recorded by Shelby Lynne, Johnny Cash and others) would be included, and it is the opening track on both the CD and the DVD. It is also great to find Light of the stable (originally recorded by Emmylou Harris, with Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Neil Young as backing singers) on both the CD and DVD. I have heard another version, but this song is rarely recorded so it's great to find it here.

There is much to like here, although I think the first CD was slightly better than this one. Against that, this one comes with the DVD that includes most songs from both CDs. Of course, if you love the Skaggs' music, as I do, you'll want both CDs anyway.
