I originally purchased this to make sure my small dog could climb out of our pool in case she fell in. However, that hasn't happened, at least not yet. So the upside of this purchase is that I no longer find drowned chipmunks, voles and squirrels in my pool. I always felt sad for them when they drowned before, and am grateful to the Skamper Ramp folks for helping me save these small beings.

The ramp is a sturdy plastic that floats in the water. It was easy to teach our small Shih-Poo puppies how to climb out of the water on it and was not too slippery for them. They could not climb out of the pool using the top step in the shallow end of the water because their bodies are too little, but they can use this ramp when they swim up to it.

We recently brought a new kitten home and were very concerned about it falling in the pool when we were away. Our larger adult can is able to pull himself out, but the kitten would have no chance. We had to restrict the cat door so that he was unable to go near the pool when we were gone, this disrupted the pattern of our other cat. Once we installed the Skamper ramp, we wanted to train kitty to use it. This part is critical. We placed him in the pool near the middle and watched him swim around a bit. Someone was in the pool to assist. At first we had installed the ramp at the end of the pool opposite the steps, but then noticed it was kitty's instinct to swim to the steps. (he probably had seen humans get out that way)So we moved the ramp next to the steps and handrail. We placed him in again and he went directly to it and climbed up the ramp. We place him in the pool at least once a week to be sure he understands how to use the ramp and each time he is more proficient at using the skamper ramp. I almost think he likes the pool. So, train your animal to use it. Don't just assume they can, although I still think it would save their life without training them. The point is to have peace of mind that your animal will not drown. That is what Skamper Ramp has given us.
