5.0 out of 5 stars end small mammal fatalities in your pool
I originally purchased this to make sure my small dog could climb out of our pool in case she fell in. However, that hasn't happened, at least not yet. So the upside of this purchase is that I no longer find drowned chipmunks, voles and squirrels in my pool. I always felt sad for them when they drowned before, and am grateful to the Skamper Ramp folks for helping me...

1.0 out of 5 stars useless for dogs, fine for very small critters
This was useless to get my medium sized dog out of the water. The plastic is slippery and there is no way for a dog to get a grip enough to get out. The ramp kept flipping vertical unless I stood and held it and even then it was a challenge. But no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to work for my pet. If you just want it to keep bugs and critters from drowning in...

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice pet ramp, June 26, 2009

The ramp is a sturdy plastic that floats in the water. It was easy to teach our small Shih-Poo puppies how to climb out of the water on it and was not too slippery for them. They could not climb out of the pool using the top step in the shallow end of the water because their bodies are too little, but they can use this ramp when they swim up to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peace of Mind, July 10, 2010

We recently brought a new kitten home and were very concerned about it falling in the pool when we were away. Our larger adult can is able to pull himself out, but the kitten would have no chance. We had to restrict the cat door so that he was unable to go near the pool when we were gone, this disrupted the pattern of our other cat. Once we installed the Skamper ramp, we wanted to train kitty to use it. This part is critical. We placed him in the pool near the middle and watched him swim around a bit. Someone was in the pool to assist. At first we had installed the ramp at the end of the pool opposite the steps, but then noticed it was kitty's instinct to swim to the steps. (he probably had seen humans get out that way)So we moved the ramp next to the steps and handrail. We placed him in again and he went directly to it and climbed up the ramp. We place him in the pool at least once a week to be sure he understands how to use the ramp and each time he is more proficient at using the skamper ramp. I almost think he likes the pool. So, train your animal to use it. Don't just assume they can, although I still think it would save their life without training them. The point is to have peace of mind that your animal will not drown. That is what Skamper Ramp has given us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little ramp!, June 5, 2011

I purchased this ramp in the event that my small dogs or cats fell into our above-ground pool. This product is intended to attach to a deck of some sort or the side of an in-ground pool, but we attached ours directly to the top of our above-ground pool. It took a bit of tweaking, but it's very steady and holds our 10-15 pound animals well. We let our dogs swim around a bit and then direct them to the ramp. They sit there to catch their breath, swim some more, then come back to the ramp when they need a break or are ready to get out. We did this for 2 days and they seem to have the hang of it. It may not actually ever need to be used, but I like having the peace of mind that if they need it, it's there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great For the First Season of Use, August 11, 2011

Great product design which works well as an escape ramp for critters who fall into the pool, at least for the first season of use. During the second season of use the Ramp developed long splits with cracking and has now become unusable. The ramp is basically plastic covered foam core board - it is extremely overpriced. Don't depend on it lasting more than one (or two, if you live in a mild climate) season of use.
