This review is from: Skate or Die (Video Game)
Well, I was 12 when this game came out in '88. I remember it fondly, as I was into the whole general area of culture which included thrash metal, skating, comic books and horror movies, and so I recently bought a copy in a used game store so's I could settle in with some nice, nostalgic gaming. So I start to play and, WHOA DUDE, I can't believe I was ever skilled with these crap controls; I used to be able to pull every trick volitionally in freestyle! I used to be able to actually leave the ramp in the high jump! I shut it off after about 10 unsatisfying <-(understatement) minutes. The only event that was actually playable was the pool joust. Then I remembered: I USED TO PLAY THIS GAME WITH THE MAX CONTROLLER!! Yes, the nes MAX controller is essential to actually PLAY this game.
I don't have any problem with the graphics or sound. To me the game does a great job of representing aspects of the culture. How much fun is this game? Well, without the MAX controller it is ridiculously un-fun, 1 out of 5 stars. WITH the MAX controller back in those days of '88 it was probably a 4.5 out of 5 stars for me. It was fun once I mastered the controls and friends came over to compete.

Skate or Die was essentially a multi player/tournament style game released on the NES in the late 80's. It had lots of skateboarding games where you can challenge other players. If you didn't have any friends to play with, you were out of luck because playing against the computer wasn't as much as fun. The graphics, music and sound effects were average at best. The controls were perfect so if you were able to have friends play against you, then the game was fun. What could have helped this game even further was to include the ability to save the players' names, times and high scores. Every time you played it, you had to register everyone and the game kept of everyone's results until you turned it off.So in short, the controls and different kinds of skateboarding games were good. The graphics, music and sound effects were just average and since there is no main story mode, you had to have friends to make the 2 player VS mode fun. I got this as a Christmas present many years ago and my friends had more fun with it than I did and that's saying something. You've been warned. :P

Yeah the title of the game is a bit cheesy but it's a fun game, and while nowadays you have awesome 3D games like the ones made by Tony Hawk, this was a solid NES title, with as much fun and graphics as you could have given the limited capability of the Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom.
