4.0 out of 5 stars this game was my cup of tea
Well, I was 12 when this game came out in '88. I remember it fondly, as I was into the whole general area of culture which included thrash metal, skating, comic books and horror movies, and so I recently bought a copy in a used game store so's I could settle in with some nice, nostalgic gaming. So I start to play and, WHOA DUDE, I can't believe I was ever skilled with...

Well, I was 12 when this game came out in '88. I remember it fondly, as I was into the whole general area of culture which included thrash metal, skating, comic books and horror movies, and so I recently bought a copy in a used game store so's I could settle in with some nice, nostalgic gaming. So I start to play and, WHOA DUDE, I can't believe I was ever skilled with these crap controls; I used to be able to pull every trick volitionally in freestyle! I used to be able to actually leave the ramp in the high jump! I shut it off after about 10 unsatisfying <-(understatement) minutes. The only event that was actually playable was the pool joust. Then I remembered: I USED TO PLAY THIS GAME WITH THE MAX CONTROLLER!! Yes, the nes MAX controller is essential to actually PLAY this game.
I don't have any problem with the graphics or sound.
To me the game does a great job of representing aspects of the culture.
How much fun is this game? Well, without the MAX controller it is ridiculously un-fun, 1 out of 5 stars. WITH the MAX controller back in those days of '88 it was probably a 4.5 out of 5 stars for me. It was fun once I mastered the controls and friends came over to compete.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good game if you had friends, September 30, 2011

Skate or Die was essentially a multi player/tournament style game released on the NES in the late 80's. It had lots of skateboarding games where you can challenge other players. If you didn't have any friends to play with, you were out of luck because playing against the computer wasn't as much as fun. The graphics, music and sound effects were average at best. The controls were perfect so if you were able to have friends play against you, then the game was fun. What could have helped this game even further was to include the ability to save the players' names, times and high scores. Every time you played it, you had to register everyone and the game kept of everyone's results until you turned it off.

So in short, the controls and different kinds of skateboarding games were good. The graphics, music and sound effects were just average and since there is no main story mode, you had to have friends to make the 2 player VS mode fun. I got this as a Christmas present many years ago and my friends had more fun with it than I did and that's saying something. You've been warned. :P

Yeah the title of the game is a bit cheesy but it's a fun game, and while nowadays you have awesome 3D games like the ones made by Tony Hawk, this was a solid NES title, with as much fun and graphics as you could have given the limited capability of the Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom.

5.0 out of 5 stars No way!!!, November 21, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Skate or Die (Video Game)
This game has all the feelings of the 80's skater. I mean I really felt Rad playing this. This isn't really like a game. It has several mini games...one is where you and an opponent each take turns with a Giant Q-tip like in American gladiators and take turns dueling in an empty swimming pole. You do not both get the Giant Q-tip at the same time. I guess you could call this the SUMMER GAMES of BOARDING!!! I do enjoy it, but the play is very limited. Like I said...it's like playing winter games and such. But I really enjoy it and it is cheap...so. But this game is nothing like it's Step Brother SKATE OR DIE 2 Skate or Die 2. It does have Rodney in it and you do board, but that game has a purpose. They two games are not made by the same producers.

-Thanks

Skate Or Die is one of those games that stands the test of time. Going back after all these years the gaming and controls still hold up. Sign up in the skate shop and compete in all the events. This game has a variety of different aspects of skateboard gameplay down. The half pipe isn't that bad. You can do some grabs and body turns on your board. Other events include highjump, jam, race, and joust. The jam is awesome. You and another guy race through an alley way and you get to punch and kick eachother. I also like the race in this game. It's called a race even though you skate by yourself. The controls are tricky in this one but you get to race downhill and there's some sweet jumps in this level. And finnally, there's the joust. Here you get to skate in a swimming pool with a jousting stick and you get 5 chances to knock down your opponent. After that you have to avoid being knocked down. There's not too much to do when you play this game by yourself other than competing for high scores at the skate shop. Because of that the game lacks purpose and can be a bit repetitive. That's why it's best to play with friends as up to 8 people can play in a competition. This is more of a tournament style game that's worth getting with part 2. It's an easy play that's fun to pass around and play with others. Different from Skate or Die 2 but in a good way.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Vintage Classic for Punks Everywhere, May 15, 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Skate or Die (Video Game)
This game had it all; skateboards, purple mohawks, and the man trying to keep you down. There are several events you can skate in such as the half-pipe, high jump, a race, freestyle and a few others. This game is pretty fun but it was a little difficult to learn how to be decent at it. Overall though, I really like this game, especially for it's cultural value.
