Book Description

An instructional guide to an increasingly popular sport, this book reviews the basics of skateboarding, the mental and emotional side of the sport, and what it takes to become an advanced skater. As aggression is a key factor to skating success, this book attempts to pinpoint where the risks begin to outweigh a skater’s chance for reward and success. Also included are sequential shots of 25 street and park tricks, to help skaters visualize and learn new concepts and skills.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-This book, the follow-up to Werner and Badillo's Skateboarder's Start-Up (Tracks, 2000), is aimed at advanced enthusiasts looking for tips on performing sophisticated tricks. The book is divided into four chapters; the first queries a group of professional skateboarders on how they deal with fear, what equipment they use, where they like to ride, and more. Riders will enjoy reading quotes from pros such as Tony Alva that encourage a nonconformist image. The following section features 25 advanced skateboarding tricks, illustrated by numerous black-and-white photographs. The captioned instructions offer step-by-step guidance. Despite the fact that many of these photos are poorly reproduced, skateboarders will be able to follow the tricks presented. The remaining chapters deal with building skate parks and skateboarding in Colorado and Oregon, but they offer minimum detail. Despite flaws, this title will augment heavily used skateboarding collections.

From Booklist

"Skate tough or go home," says pro-skating legend Tony Alva in this follow-up to the authors' Skateboarders' Start-Up (2000), which is geared toward beginning and intermediate skaters. New Levels aims at advanced, experienced riders. Badillo, a professional skating veteran, begins with a section of pros' opinions on a range of topics, from dealing with risks and recovering from accidents to preferred terrain. The following chapters (the book's bulk) show 25 advanced skating tricks in step-by-step photographs and commentary. Closing chapters offer advice on building a skate park and a list of the favored skate parks, oddly focusing only on Colorado and Oregon. Many readers may skip the opening interviews, with their vague motivational quotes, and flip straight to the well-presented and specific technical advice or to the extensive resource section at the end. Adults offering this to teens should know that safety is generally not emphasized; most pictures feature helmetless riders, for example. Still, it is a useful resource for larger collections in which skating materials are in demand. Bill Ott

4.0 out of 5 stars At least it was written by a skateboarder, March 9, 2003

This review is from: Skateboarding: New Levels: Tips and Tricks for Serious Riders (Paperback)
Skateboarding books have yet to truly capture the art, but Steve Badillo makes a valiant attempt in Skateboarding: New Levels. In Skateboarding, Steve combines interviews with seasoned pros, trick tips, and information about how to upstart a skateboard following in anytown, USA. While the interviews with some well known professional skateboarders seem like a good idea, the questions asked and the responses given do little to help a skateboarder just starting out or an intermediate trying to further his or her expertise. The questions are well intended with an example being "how do you deal with fear?", but the responses seem to general and generic to help like "I try to be relaxed." As the book progresses to trick tips, anyone would realize that the trick tips are way too specific and random to help someone trying to progress. The combinations make no sense, going from a one footed Japan air to a backside feeble 180 out. This random assortment of trick tips feels unbalanced and voids the potential for real help once again. The final segment, "building a park", is actually the only useful and helpful section of the book. In this chapter, Werner and Badillo identify the advantages to all types of skateparks and approaches to get them funded and approved. Without the chapter on skatepark construction, this book would have been a 2 star book, but with the useful information about building a park and the fact that the information is true because it was written by a real skateboarder, this book is a 4 star contender.
