Book Description

June 28, 2006
Ramp tricks—skate moves made on, over, or around wood ramps, cement bowls, and half-pipes—are a key, albeit challenging, component of skateboarding. Hundreds of captioned, sequential photographs demonstrate precisely how these exacting moves are safely made in this indispensable guide to 40 ramp tricks. Beginning with basic moves, including stalls, grinds, and slides, skaters gradually learn the particular positioning and balance needed to perform more advanced tricks such as flips and airs. A brief history of ramp skateboarding examines the birth of the genre as well as champions of the sport, including the pioneering Dogtown Crew and current stars Bob Burnquist and Tony Hawk.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School–This book is composed mainly of photographs and step-by-step instructions for performing 35 ramp tricks. Goodfellow opens with a brief history of the sport, beginning with the Dogtown crew surfers of Santa Monica, CA, in the 1970s, and concluding with Danny Way's 2005 jump of the Great Wall of China. He also provides thumbnail biographies of the sport's various superstars. The text is generally accessible, although such terms as ollie and fakie are used without specific definitions. Yamaoda's black-and-white photos are clear and illustrative of successive positions. Although the riders pictured do not wear helmets or pads, there is a disclaimer encouraging readers to follow safety procedures and wear safety equipment at all times. A table of contents lists individual tricks; the index provides page numbers for tricks as well as skateboarders. A comprehensive list of resources, from books and magazines to camps, museums, public skate parks, Web sites, and videos, is included. An instructive and inspirational how-to and reference.–Sondra VanderPloeg, Tracy Memorial Library, New London, NH

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Explanations of Manuevers, Needs to be formatted for Kindle though..., September 21, 2011
Evan Goodfellow has an uncanny gift for explaining skateboard manuevers; better than most Professional Trick Tips from various skate mags I've read. While its great to have instant access to such a plethora of tricks in a portable guide, this needs to be properly formatted for the Kindle...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not suited for eBook readers, March 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The layout of the pictures does not work well with eBook readers. Following the steps in order requires flipping pages back and forth all the time which is rather confusing. The "history of skateboarding" section is merely a summary of various Wikipedia pages. The trick photos are not very appealing. Many of the tricks are just frontside/backside variations, so cut the number of unique tricks in half. There are many formatting errors like missing spaces after dots. Most tricks are not clearly separated by headlines, but only by the annotation of the picture sequence. Having said that, the book does explain the tricks as advertised and does give hints on what's particularly difficult about each trick. Overall a rather disappointing eBook experience.
