Book Description

EDITORIAL REVIEWS

"Mancusi has scored a hit. Dawn is likeable, and any teen girl--wealthy or not--should identify with her typical problems. From boys to friends to parents, the author covers it all. She even manages to include one or two deeper messages in the form of "straight edge" teens and a "perfect" wealthy boy who turns out to be a real jerk. "
-- Alexandra Kay, RT Book Reviews

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Dawn Miller is sick of being good. Her parents have scheduled her to within an inch of her life and her popular friends can only think of hooking up and shopping. She's ready for a serious boyfriend, and it's definitely not the obnoxious rich boy everyone wants her to date.

Then she meets Starr, the headmaster's rebellious daughter who refuses to play by the rules. The differences between them are night and day but Dawn is fascinated. Starr introduces her to a world she didn't even know existed: hip indy record stores, all night raves, and cute skateboarders who hang out underneath a parking deck downtown.

Skateboarders like the gorgeous Sean, who's sweet, smart, and curiously serious --everything Dawn's always wanted in a boyfriend. Soon she finds herself head over heels and doing the unthinkable, lying to her parents and friends. Deep down she knows her parents will never approve of this boy from the wrong side of town...and her secret life is finally catching up to her. Will Dawn be forced to choose between the girl she was and the girl she is meant to be? And if she chooses, will she lose her skater boy forever?

If you're looking for a cute but also funny book then you will like this book or maybe even love it. I loved this book because it can teach others not to judge people by where they live but by their personalities and by how they treat others. I mean the main girl character came from a very rich family but she's still a good girl . Then she met this guy that's from not so good neighboorhood. But he still was a good guy . even though he wasn't raised in the best of ways. And he treated people with respect even when they didn't think he was a person at first. I think that anybody that has read any of Mari Mancusi's books and liked them should read this one for alittle bit of a love story kinda like a modern day Romeo and Juliet love story with out it being to saucy. This book is also a good book for people of all ages from age 12-up . It's not just for Teenagers it's for Adults too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sk8er Boy September 30, 2005
By AK
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Since forever, Dawn Miller has chafed under the rule of the Evil Ones, aka, Mom and Dad. Her best friends, the three Ashleys, the queens of the private, snobby school she attends, are shallow, but they're all she has, except for her poetry. Then, she meets the headmaster's daughter, Starr. Despite her dad being the head of the school, Starr is a rebel, looking like a teen version of the lead singer of Evanescence, going to raves, and getting pierced. At first, Starr dismisses Dawn as a "Barbie", but when Dawn dares to break out of her shell, she earns Starr's respect. On one of their illicit outtings, she meets Sean, a very nice boy who is from the wrong side of the tracks. For him, she's willing to break all the rules, but are their worlds too different to combine?

*** Although much of what Dawn does is not admirable, or to be recommended to the readers, the underlying message is very positive. It shows that there is more to a person that just what the surface reveals, or at least there should be, and that parents are okay, if given a chance. ***

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! February 16, 2012

"Skater Boy" is a great read. It evokes emotion every step of the way as if I am right there with Dawn and her friends. Dawn is 15 years old and trying to break free from her parents tight hold and expectations. She takes a walk on the wild side when she meets a new friend, Starr. Who knew rebellion could be so much fun? This book is very easy to relate to and highly recommended. (posted this same review on Goodreads first)

More About the Author

Mari Mancusi always wanted a dragon as a pet. Unfortunately the fire insurance premiums proved a bit too large and her house a bit too small--so she chose to write about them instead. Today she works as an award-winning young adult author and freelance television producer, for which she has won two Emmys. When not writing about fanciful creatures of myth and legend, Mari enjoys goth clubbing, cosplay, watching cheesy (and scary) horror movies, and her favorite guilty pleasure--playing videogames. A graduate of Boston University, she lives in Austin, Texas with her husband Jacob, daughter Avalon, and their dog Mesquite.
