How does this work?
Clicking the “Test drive now” button launches a copy of this app on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), a web service that provides on-demand compute capacity in the cloud for developers. When you interact with the simulated phone using your mouse and keyboard, we send those inputs over the Internet to the app running on Amazon EC2 — just like your mobile device would send a finger tap to the app. Our servers then send the video and audio output from the app back to your computer. All this happens in real time, allowing you to explore the features of the app as if it were running on your mobile device.

Product Description
If You're a Beginner, or Just a Bit Rusty

Basic Spanish for Dummies offers practical tutorials suitable for beginning Spanish students, or for those whose Spanish may have gotten a little rusty. In addition to primers on common words and phrases, basic vocabulary and grammar, the app provides electronic flashcards, audio playback, video tutorials, and more.

Everyday Words and Phrases

Learn common, practical expressions and their correct pronunciation with the aid of audio playback in the Words/Phrases section. How do you say "Excuse me" or "Would you repeat that, please?" in Spanish? How do you ask for directions to the supermarket, airport, or embassy? What does it mean when someone leans toward you and says "Discúlpame"? Or tells you "¡Buena suerte!"?

Los Conceptos Básicos

Master Spanish articles, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verb conjugations, and sentence construction--"los conceptos básicos"--in the "Basics" section. Why are there two different Spanish verbs for "to be," "ser" and "estar," and what's the difference between them? How do you form simple sentences, negative sentences, or questions?

Video Tutorials

Practice your pronunciation with instructional videos on the Spanish alphabet, consonants, vowels, and introductions. Watch and listen as the speaker explains and demonstrates how to vocalize these fundamental building blocks of language and interaction.

Abogado v Avocado

Reference the app's built-in English-Spanish/Spanish-English dictionary any time, whether seeking a Spanish word for what you want to say or an English translation of Spanish words that you've come across. What's an "abogado" and how's that different than an avocado? You'd better know that one.

"¡Vamos a Ir de Farra Like It's 1999!"

In the Parts of Tens section, you can pick up idiomatic expressions that make you sound more fluent, less stiff and formal. Did your train pull away just as you arrived on the platform? Snap your fingers and say "¡Así a secas!" Going out on the town? Learn how to say "We're gonna party, tonight!" en español.

Save and Share

As you study, tap the star alongside words and phrases you want to return to. This saves those materials to your Favorites page, so you'll have no trouble finding them again.

Once you've gained some confidence with the language, you can try out what you're learning by sending Spanish e-mail greetings to friends and family from the app's Share page. If your contacts include Spanish speakers willing to provide feedback, try building this into a fuller Spanish-language conversation.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for tablets May 12, 2012

This app looks terrible on Kindle Fire. Fonts are tiny and non-configurable. The icons are separated by huge epmty spaces. Clearly the app was designed for a small phone screen and was never modified to support different screen sizes and resolutions.

1.0 out of 5 stars Read the EULA on this thing before you buy! March 20, 2012

I downloaded this program and settled back to have fun learning a little Spanish. Well... it was anything but fun because before I could use my program, I was confronted by a mile long agreement I had to accept. It basically gave away any and all rights to have issues with the program fixed and even gave them the right to pull it off my machine without telling me why and make me stop using it, even if they no longer had a way to contact me. So theoretically I was accepting legal responsibility for reading their mind! So what exactly am I paying for...??? If you are tired of feeling forced to agree to this kind of denial of your basic rights AFTER you download an APP and they have your money, don't buy this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Spanish for beginners. April 26, 2013

Interesting and will help one learn basic spanish phrases. Helpful with elementary communications. A good place to start.
What else can one say. As one with a limited ability in Spanish, I did learn some things new and definitely re-learned other things.

I've never been fond of the Spanish language. But when I hear it spoken here, it comes to life. Good!

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Basic vocab and prases December 31, 2012

I think a product like this could have better inter active functionality. The buttons on the flash cards are harder to use then they need to be. I would like to have the ability to break up the vocabulary into smaller groups to practice rather then have one large list.

I like the layout, but it is not set up like a study plan i.e. with a beginning and working to an end.

The presentation is somewhat bland. It's good if you only need to look up everyday translations and common words and phrases.
