Hearing Carol "Night Eagle" Shoemaker talk about the moment she discovered she was adopted, or reading about it in her new autobiography, one can almost see it: the green, tattered suitcase, the old photographs, the "crisp, white, bulging envelope."

And that's the idea.

Shoemaker, 64, of Kempner, is hoping to parlay her life story, "Skeletons in the Closet," recently released by PublishAmerica, into a screenplay and movie deal.

She will have a book signing from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday at Crafters Corner in Copperas Cove, where she sells imported goods from Israel, one of the lands she's discovered during her lifelong journey toward belonging.

Born in 1946, Shoemaker grew up in Maryland, discovering at the age of 13 that her world was full of what she calls "shadows."

The last 50 years have been a fight to find out who she is and where she comes from, turning up long-lost siblings, including a possible twin sister, a Jewish heritage, and connections to both Cherokee and Cheyenne tribes, she writes.

There has also been rejection from her alleged birth mother, poverty and heartache, in the form of lost loves and the death of a child.

It was the tragic death of her adult son, Ricky, in 2002, that finally led her to record her life story, she said.

"(He) was one of those kids that's sent from God," she said, explaining that he had always encouraged her to keep digging into her past.

She hopes her struggle to uncover basic truths about where she comes from will resonate with other adoptees.

"People have a right to know who they are," she said. "When you don't even have that foundation of a mother or father, you've got to find out.

Insanity takes a new twist In the fact that the mentally ill are allowed to publish this kind of trash. It is my hope that the author will seek professional help. German? Indian? Jew? Single birth? Twin? Triplett?
