The contributors to this volume trace its ancient rise, its divergence into academic and Pyrrhonic versions, its influence on Stoicism and other Hellenistic movements, and its rediscovery and revival in the West with the Renaissance.

But, can one really live as a skeptic in the world, or is all just an academic exercise in one's head? In one of the essays in this book, Burnyeat himself discusses the question voiced by David Hume and others.
