Book Description

Shakespeare famously had Hamlet say to Horatio that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in his philosophy. P. T. Barnum, on the other hand, claimed that there's a sucker born every minute. If you put these two concepts together, and stir well, you get the world of woo-woo -- the oddball assortment of crazy ideas and loony theories that encompass such disparate realms as homeopathy, astrology, crystal energies, Bigfoot sightings, aliens, and why people keep seeing the face of Jesus on grilled cheese sandwiches.

"Skeptophilia" is a skeptic's view of this world -- usually wry, sometimes puzzled, often funny, this collection of 120 essays looks at why people believe odd, counterfactual, unscientific ideas, many times even in the face of evidence to the contrary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Entertaining July 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Insightful, witty, and amusing, it offers a humorous view of human fallibility in both the personal and the larger sense. Definite must-read for everyone from young-earth creationists on up through your average skeptic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Food For Brainmeats! November 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I absolutely love this author's previous works, so when he came out with Skeptophilia, I couldn't wait to grab it. I knew it would be well-written, clever, and fiercely funny, and I was not disappointed. Mr. Bonnet shines the light on some pretty shady, woo-woo wonk-nutty stuff, and had me snort-laughing my tea. My only request? More! More!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it March 3, 2014

This book made me laugh, shake my head, roll my eyes, laugh some more, tear up occasionally, and worst of all -- T H I N K. At times politically incorrect and certainly controversial, Mr. Bonnet comes through loud and clear as the thinking man's (ok, person's) skeptic. With undeniable logic, he debunks some long-held "truths," and simply causes one to ponder others. You may not agree with everything he says, but if you read this book, you'll never be classed in with the "sheeple" again. I could hardly put this book down for wanting to see what he was going to say next. I do highly recommend it as an entertaining AND enlightening read!
