This review is from: Sketches (Audio CD)
The decade of the 1980s was not a very kind one to Jansch; not only did he have health problems, but his albums were lacklustre and didn't sell well. This 1990 release helped start turning things around. It consists of new recordings of several of his better known older works (such as 'Needle of Death,' 'As the Day Grows Longer Now,' 'A Woman Like You,' 'Poison,' and 'One for Jo') coupled with about as many new works. I personally still like the original versions better, and the new material is not better than mediocre, but overall there is more punch to his play and involvement in the music than had been evident for a number of years. The backing is sparse, with more of an overall "contemporary folk" sound than a blues or country one.
