Soul of the City,
By Presbyteros "This Is the Record of John" (Glassboro, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sketches From the Book of Life (Audio CD)
Manny Albam was a lovely man who was an artist in residence at Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) when I was a student there (not one of his). This is actually a reissue of the classic "Soul of the City", long unavailable, with added cuts from an album called "Brass on Fire". Soul of the City depicted different aspects of the city, complete with sound effects. On one hand, it is very evocative of the 60's, but on the other hand, it holds up well, as the best of the 60's. Big jazz band with strings; or studio orchestra as it came to be called. Sometimes you can visualize a movie that it might go with. Recorded with a really bright studio sound, the playing is terrific, especially JJ Johnson.
