Book Description

August 15, 1997
Sketches of Carmel is the most extraordinary publication of its kind. It's a visual delight where art, guides information and ads blend beautifully in a "must have" souvenir, coffee-table, hardbound book. Through the eyes and skill of artist Lisa Bryan-Day, the whole area has been captured in clever and unique full-color spreads with surprises such as removable postcards, journal pages, a secret pocket and a fold-out overview map of the whole area. Within the sturdy sketchbook-style format, one may save memorbilla and photos or sketch or write. Sketches appeals to all age groups, and makes an excellent gift! Sketches is a part of history, and potentially is the only entirely painted guide with so many features. It truly isa unique way to give a little piece of Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful Essays, August 15, 2006
I recently reread this collection. Marable here grapples with the problems of black political thought and action in the post-civil rights era. After the relatively clearcut struggle against Jim Crow, what direction should black politics take? Through examinations of Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition, Ben Chavis's brief leadership of the NAACP, the confirmation of Clarence Thomas, and other episodes of the 1980s and 1990s, Marable handles issues of race and class with sophistication and a calm, even-handed delivery. He is particularly astute on emergent class divisions within black America and their political implications. Highly recommended.
