Editorial Reviews

Mick Harvey - internationally renowned for his career with The Birthday Party and Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds and his soundtrack and production work - has most recently collaborated with PJ Harvey once again, co-producing and playing on her latest album, Let England Shake and will be joining her on tour throughout 2011. The first album to be entirely written by Harvey, the 11-track album was recorded and mixed with David McCluney at Atlantis Sound, Port Melbourne with additional recording at Harvey's own Grace Lane music room. Sketches From The Book Of The Dead sees Mick Harvey (playing most of the instruments) joined by Rosie Westbrook on double bass and J.P. Shilo on accordion & violin, with Xanthe Waite contributing occasional ethereal backing vocals.

I ran across a Nick Cave CD at a garage sale about 10 years ago. I still can not figure out why Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are not a household name, they are easily one of the best bands around. Later, I noticed that Mick Harvey had some solo work and I picked up One Man's Treasure. I was blown away. Mick's solo work is closer to Nick Cave than say...The Birthday Club. But, it is still quite distinctive. Mostly, I feel one voice, full of emotion, singing powerful songs. The songs are not as blackly written as Cave's songs; but like Cave's songs, you need to listen to the words. The Book of the Dead is another great CD. Right now, I still hold One Man's Treasure at a higher level. But, to be fair I have listened to it a few hundred times as compared to just a handfull of times for the new CD. If you like Nick Cave and/or Mick Harvey; pick this CD up. If you are more into the harder Grinderman or Birthday Club, maybe not. If you have no idea who any of these people are...go buy Murder Ballads by Nick Cave and prepare yourself for some light uplifting entertainment.

I purchased this CD based on just a few notes I heard...I absolutely LOVE it! It's one of those rare gems I can listen to over and over without tiring of it. In addition, each "sketch" from this "Book of the Dead" is beautiful, melancholic, haunting and a true piece of art.

I'm a visual artist and am always searching for that right "sound" with which to draw and create to. This one ranks highly on my list!

I love Nick Cave and was excited to get something by Mick Harvey. However, while I really like the first song-- October Boy-- the rest of the cd sounds like less interesting versions of it. There is just very little emotional range here and I had to force myself to listen to the whole thing.
