Ms. Hamlin has been visiting Guantanamo Bay since 2006, documenting the most unique detention center ever created. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks it was necessary to hold certain enemy combatants from the Global War on Terror but to hold them where the intelligence value of what they knew would not be compromised by legal niceties, niceties which the detainees did not believe in (and even hated) but which liberal lawyers would use to the advantage of their clients. As a result, Joint Task Force Guantanamo was established in a small corner of Cuba leased by the United States. Not part of the United States, it is nevertheless under U.S. control.

Detainees have been processed for justice via military tribunal, a practice recognized in U.S. jurisprudence. The courtroom proceedings of these tribunals are held cannot be photographed or videoed for security reasons. This makes Hamlin's job absolutely vital. She produces sketches of the proceedings, much as is done in some civil trials. There are many advantages to this process, as some details which might violate security could be easily eliminated and artistic license could be used to convey the full impact of the moment. Many of her sketches are reproduced here and the "backstory" provided. Ms. Hamlin had to have much patience at times, putting up with courts which did not always accommodate her needs, security within Camp Justice, long hours and inconsistencies of military rules and procedures. Despite all this she is an excellent artist and her body of work from Guantanamo provides an important, not to mention unique, record of this chapter in American history.

First rate drawings done on location. No easy task as the limitations are many and the controls quite tight. Janet does an exemplary job bringing life to the events there.

The sketches are great considering the time allotted to do them. The narrative was interesting and informative. Money well spent.
