5.0 out of 5 stars Best winter themed instrumental surfer music c.d. out there
But unfortunlty not the Australian dj mixers who released Since I Left You
this is a 60's surfer group.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun - and historically significant!
Yep, the Avalanches were a studio group that included notables Billy Strange, Tommy Tedesco, Hal Blaine, and David Gates - later of 70's icons Bread. All the songs are "winter-themed," but several of them are also closely associated with Christmas.

3.0 out of 5 stars +1/2 - 1960s L.A. studio players cut some rockin' instrumentals, January 17, 2011
This review is from: Ski' Surfin' (Audio CD)
The Avalanches were a one-off studio group formed around Los Angeles studio players Billy Strange and Tommy Tedesco on guitar, future Bread main-man David Gates on bass, and legendary Wrecking Crew drummer Hal Blaine. The original instrumentals offered here (in addition to the themed covers, "Baby It's Cold Outside" and "Winter Wonderland") are the sort of studio rockers that populated dozens of mid-60s albums and exploitation film soundtracks. Strange and Tedesco blaze away in their respective twangy and fuzz-soaked styles, and the rhythm section burns down the slopes. There's little here that's really surf music, aside from a few moments of half-hearted staccato picking; the occasional jabs of pedal steel suggest Alvino Rey and the electric piano leans to the soul rave-ups of Ray Charles. But mostly this sounds like incidental music from a low-budget AIP teen-film. And that's a complement. 3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. [©2011 hyperbolium dot com]

David Gates and company play a nice set of originals and classic tunes that are thematically centered around the winter season. Excellent sound and artwork on this reissue - first time on CD for this one.
