Editorial Reviews

Review

Skibber Bee Bye is the product of a remarkable and articulate new cartoon style for which the only context is the sensibility that created it.” —Print Magazine
--This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Product Description

“Ron Regé is one of a handful of cartoonists in the history of the medium not only to reinvent comics to suit his own idiosyncratic impulses and inspirations as an artist, but also to imbue it with his own peculiar, ever-changing emotional energy. To me, he is unquestionably one of ‘the greats.’” —Chris Ware

Ron Regé, Jr., creates his own visual poetry that sets him apart from other cartoonists as one of the most original artists to enter the medium in the past decade. His storytelling is neither linear nor altogether accessible; however, his recognizable thin line and cute characters draw you into a dreamlike, sensitive fantasy world that, as odd as it seems, is entirely realistic.

4.0 out of 5 stars gorgeous, May 3, 2002
the book is a gorgeous object. the glue binding is not fun. it's a fascinating book, but i'm sure i don't get all of it. beautiful artwork though. make sure you check out his full-color work in drawn & quarterly 4. it's a beautiful story, but difficult to comprehend even for me, and I'm used to hard comic books. this book has two very impressive quotes on the back from chris ware and daniel clowes, though, and that should motivate anyone to try it. this might be highwater books's best product so far. -yak.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Million Lines Tell a Story, January 8, 2001
By "noisyspoon" (Colorado, US of A) - See all my reviews
I know that I've seen Ron Rege Jr's images somewhere. But I'm not quite sure where. Probably in my dreams. In 'Skibber Bee-Bye', Rege Jr. creates a world where elephants wear hats, eyeballs grow out of peoples arms, and all the creatures hang out at the 'Lik-Lik Club' where they are entertained by a rock band made up of eyeball-fairy things. Everything is odd and skewed, but strangely familiar. Sure, you've never danced with an elephant, but most likely, you've been cramed into a hot, dark, smoky club and made eye contact with some stranger across the room. This is what makes 'Skibber Bee-Bye' so fascinating, you can relate to the situations, and yet be transported to some other world you've never been to before. Rege Jr. accomplishes all this with very little dialogue, and drawings that are simple and direct. 'Skibber Bee-Bye' is one of my favorite graphic novels, it's inventive, original, funny, twisted, and imaginative. Hey... It never hurts to have elephants wearing hats either.
