Amazon.com Review

There's no tool like a router for edging, trimming or cutting. Skil's new 2 horsepower plunge router can perform all the functions needed in a home workshop or on the job site while drawing only 10 amps at full RPM. The 1/4-inch quick-change collet with a 2-inch plunge depth accepts a wide range of bits and cutters . The Skil 1820's Micro-Fine Depth Adjustment makes bit depth adjustments fast, easy and accurate while the soft-grip handles are ergonomically designed for comfort and ease of use. The wide base opening allows for quick and easy bit changes plus the Built-in Work Light illuminates a pattern or an outline to insure more accurate cuts. Accepts Skil's 91018 18-Piece Carbide Router Bit Set as well as most other brands of 1/4-inch bits.

Ideal for woodworkers, carpenters and cabinet makers.

Applications: Use the Skil 1815 for making cabinets or shelves, decorative inlay work, manufacturing wood trim for cabinets, rooms, doors or windows, mortising hinge plates or inlays, dovetailing cabinet drawers, edging countertops--C. Dwight Barnett

1.0 out of 5 stars Very low quality, December 16, 2008
This review is from: Skil 1820 2-HP Plunge Router with Site Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
This router uses a flimpsy mechanism to mount/unmount bits. You have to push a sliding plate over the axle to fix its position, so you can tighten/untighten the nut that fixes bits. After a while, this sliding plate will no longer grip the axle, because (a) the axle steel quality is inferior, and (b) the sliding plate steel quality is inferior.
You will end up with a rounded/worn axle which axle the sliding plate can no longer fixate. Time to buy a new one.
Please spend $50 more and have a router that will last a lifetime instead of a toy that wears out after 20 bit changes.

For the money, this is a good buy. However, the quality and workmanship
of the router are marginal at best. But it works ok.I don't believe it will hold up over the long haul(however long a haul is).

4.0 out of 5 stars Comments of Router, October 12, 2008
This review is from: Skil 1820 2-HP Plunge Router with Site Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
The 2 hp Skil 1820 Plunge Router is an ideal Machine for ocassinial home use and works as expected for a 1/4 in shank router. The only drawback is the fine depth adjustment. It is very difficult to adjust a precise dept of cut. Also it would be nice to have incorporated a two step adjustment for deep cuts so a rough cut can be made and then followed up with a final depth
