IF YOU ARE A HANDYWOMAN. . .,

This is a great buy for me because I am a new home owner and need to get projects done around the house. I knew the 18 volt battery would be too heavy. I considered the 12 volt battery but Consumer Reports rated all the 12 v brands/models as average. The 14 volt is just right because I don't sacrifice power to get a project done faster. It is a little heavy and my slender arm did get tired after 1/2 hour of drilling but by then I was completely done anyways! So, model 2587 has accurate drilling, cordless freedom and better priced than competitive brands that rated as GOOD from Consumer Reports. Sweet deal and investment. I'm sure that the battery life will improve a lot after a few recharges, just like the owner manual says. As a woman, I am more confident about doing a great job on "assembly required projects"!

The guy with the gear problem had it out of gear... it happened to me twice... not quite in gear the chuck wont spin. Smart people know to check. This is an awesome drill... powerfull and tough. I bought mine 3 years ago and while the batteries needed to be replaced recently, it is still serving me well. I am a Plumber and I use it to drill large holes in stainless steel... speed is not that much of an issue for that but torque is king for cranking large bits. I have used a grinder to make 1/2" bits fit into this drill and it will drill holes in quality stainless steel for hours. I have used it to grind and wire-brush my front railings... speed is a key factor for that... it stands up to that challenge as well. It has been dropped many times but it does not care... I could not live without it... if I ever need to replace it (which it seems I will not any time soon) I will get another one just like it. If you are thinking about getting one... stop thinking... get it... you will thank yourself. This drill out performs most drills of twice the cost

After searching for a cordless drill, I decided to rely on Consumer Reports review of the Skil 14.4v drill. Although I was unimpressed by the battery life upon first testing the drill, I found the life to improve after a few charges, which I later read in the manual is typical for the first 3-4 charges to be weak. Apparently this is part of the battery design to extend the battery's life. Overall this is a great product for the money with good standard accessories (e.g. bit storage and index and one hour charger).

Bought in 2006, second cordless drill I've owned.
It has done the job for the 2 houses we owned and flipped. Battery life is a little short, but the upside is that the charge time is about 20 mins so technically, you could use the drill forever without running out since the battery life in mine now is around 20-30mins of constant use. Same with other guy, the plumber commenting here, it has been dropped manytimes, my 4 kids (all under 6 years old) always play with it when I take breaks, it has been in water (one of our houses had yearly yard floods and I used it to tie up 1.5 inch hoses) and so far, the only part I have had to change is the counter-rotating screw that holds the chuck. It severed in one of the hard drilling jobs I was going: drilling through asphalt to make fence posts. The screw was $1.19 at an on-line store and I ordered 2 as spare. So far, nothing else has broken. As a side note, My 6.5 amp B&D spitfire 1/2" corded hammer drill lost its second gear in that same fence job I was doing. That's why I had to use my Skil cordless drill to finish the job. I would recommend and buy this drill again in a heartbeat. Hope this helps.

My other drill is a 10-year old DeWalt and it's still a better tool than this wimpy Skil. The dud-batteries are probably the main fault of the drill. Not even close to the run time I get with the DeWalt.

This Skil Drill/Driver set is very powerful and feels very solid in your hands when you are using it. The battery packs a good amount of power which goes the distance during many projects. Having an extra battery is an added bonus just in case you procrastinate and don't get the job done right away or are easily distracted.

I bought this drill for my husband and he has yet to have any complaints and has used it for several projects since he got it a couple weeks ago.

i just received product, junk. I charged batteries fully, it did not have enough power to install stormdoor. That was using 2 batteries and still could not get the job done. My old stand by dewalt finished the job.
