4.0 out of 5 stars Last resort, November 10, 2008

If you are looking to get around buying a real drill press this product will suit your needs only for small tasks. I would not recommend it for doing serious drilling. The clamping device that holds the drill in the press, doesn't hold the drill at a perfect 90 degrees without some tinkering. Also not all drill chasis are the same and it will hold on to each drill differently. In conclusion for twice as much you can buy a small bench top drill press that will suit your needs better.

1.0 out of 5 stars cheap drill press, December 16, 2008
This review is from: Skil 45140 Drill Stand for Any 3/8-Inch Electric or Cordless Drill (Tools & Home Improvement)
Item is a piece of junk. I ruined several projects as this item cannot drill a straight up/down hole. It now sits under my work bench and I have ordered a heavy duty drill press which is what I should of done to begin with. Don't waste your hard earned money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Completely useless design -- can't hold a drill at right angle, January 25, 2009

Most decent power drills have a 43mm shaft at the front to attach a handle for the left hand or to mount them in a drill stand (this is even true for Dremel-style rotary tools--there the entire body is often 43mm wide). Any decent drill stand has a 43mm mount, which allows the drill to be secured in a true right angle to the work piece. (An example would be the, admittedly pricey, Bosch BS450 drill stand.) Not so this contraption: Instead of the industry-standard 43mm it has some rounded oval that is supposed to hold the drill, but allows it to move around by several degrees.

The result will be less precision than if you simply put the work piece into a good machine vise and then use the power drill by hand--and quite likely a broken drill bit, a destroyed work piece, and with bad luck the broken drill bit injuring someone.

So far I always thought that Skil products were on the affordable side, but basically well-designed. This "drill stand", however, is an insult of the hapless buyer. Amazon would be well advised to remove it from its catalog.
