i bought one of these saws to cut some plywood after discovering my dad's craftsman had rusty and dull blade. The price of a new blade was close to the price of this entire new saw, so i bought the saw intending to use it really only once, and didn't expect much. After using it that one time, i found myself looking for new projects which involved using a circular saw. The blade it comes with makes a very clean cut, and the saw itself has more than enough power to cut through anything you might throw at it. I even used this saw to make beveled cuts in 2x4, without a problem.

Since then, a group I work with has bought two more for use in an annual construction project, and these two saws get used for several hours a day, everyday, over the span of a month. Both of these two saws have performed flawlessly over the last two years, and we're very happy with the purchases.

Spent a lot of time trying to make this saw cut through simple things (like 3/4 inch plywood) and it just wouldn't work for us, even after buying new blades for it. Goes in a few inches and stalls out, blade just stops turning. It starts up fine, spins for a little while, but doesn't seem to have enough power to make it through normal treated plywood. Pretty big disappointment considering how positive all the other reviews are. The saw seemed very underpowered to us, so much so that we couldn't use it on even basic projects around the house (making plywood boxes for gardening and compost.) Not sure if we got a flukey one or what.

Update: After some more troubleshooting it turned out the blade was just loose somehow, even though it was running it took forever to get up to speed. If this happens take the blade housing apart, reassemble and tighten everything. Once this was fixed the saw worked fine!

Pretty good saw, built an entire kitchen table with it since I am poor and couldn't afford any other tools at the time.

I can't justify spending very much money on a circular saw. I'm a part-time remodeler, not a professional carpenter, so take that caveat for what its worth. I can't justify the money for a worm-drive saw, especially since they're so much heavier. The circular saw isn't a tool I use very often for really heavy-duty applications anyway. The miter saw and sawzall both get considerably more use. For most applications with dry wood and non-beveled cuts, this saw has more than enough power. If you need to do a lot of jobsite bevel cuts at 2 inches deep, this saw might not have enough power. I prefer a table saw for those applications. With a sharp blade, this saw easily cuts through any nominally sized 2 inch lumber and plywood. And for most homeowners and DYIers, isn't that enough? I've used this saw for many remodeling applications, and it has held up just fine.
Save yourself some money on this tool and put that saved money towards a good miter saw or nailer.

Skil has been making this basic model for well over 25 plus years now. I purchased my first one when I bought my first house at age 25. I'm now 50. It just recently gave up the ghost a couple of days ago.

Just like a wheel bearing on your car, these things have a main bearing that goes bad after 300-400 hours of use. The motor brushes should also be replaced at the same time as the bearing.

I'll probably end up fixing the old one with a new bearing and bushings as it would seem a shame to throw away an old friend.

I definitely will not be taking the old one to my local Goodwill store and dumping it off for the next guy to pick up and hazardously use with worn bearings. That would be bad Karma.

So if this new saw is constructed every bit as good as they were being built way back when I bought my first one, then this replacement should last me up until age 75. Not sure if I should still be using one by that time, but that's my game plan.

Highly recommended for the non-professional for general around the home use.

I'll admit to being one of those guys who gets a new tool and thinks immediately that I can use it right away without instructions. Dumb move. Knowing that I was cutting plywood and would need a 60-tooth blade, I installed the new blade and went to work. The first few seconds were a bit slower than I anticipated, and about 4 inches into the cut, the blade stopped. I tried again--same result. Third try, guess what--same result. Finally I swallowed my pride and avoided the instructions and searched on the internet for answers. The video that was made (below the professional pictures above, not customer images/videos) clearly pointed out my flaw. I had gotten paranoid with the "DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN" inscription around the bolt and, well, didn't over tighten. But as the video pointed out, it's good to do one more turn (quarter turn, eighth-turn, can't remember, too lazy to double check) with the wrench after you can't tighten any more with your fingers. After I did that, this beast cut like a champ.

Also, I took the guy's advice and made a straight edge guide using the factory-cut/straight side of a leftover piece of 3/4" plywood from the hardware store and bought a small sheet of MSB, glued the two together using wood glue and a carpenter square. Then pressing the left part of the shoe (away from the blade) alongside the fence (the straight part of the plywood). I cut the MSB board to form a perfect guide for any future uses with this saw. Do that if you don't have one already. It's cheaper than the $30 tool you get at the hardware store and better since you have a custom-made straight edge for this saw.
