This book contains a wealth of examples to illustrate the skills which Middleman and Wood have identified and described. It provides practical and direct guidelines, and is written in a clear and engaging manner.
(Maeda Galinsky, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill )In Skills for Direct Practice in Social Work Ruth Middleman and Gale Goldberg Wood provide a practical, clear discussion of sixty-three skills needed by all who must interact purposefully with individuals and groups in helping situations. The skills are defined, illustrated in vignettes, and related to pertinent sources in the literature. They are applicable to many theoretical approaches and include fundamental considerations for social workers - appearance, vocabulary, accountability, openness, sensitivity, and many others. Skills for Direct Practice in Social Work will help students and professionals to convey their practice intentions and to overcome many of the obstacles to effective social work practice.

I used a forerunner of this book when I was in graduate school twenty years ago. I pull out the current edition when I need to review basic skills for myself or for supervisees. Middleman and Wood do a thorough job of defining sixty-three basic skills for direct paractice in social work. These skills are the foundation of any professional counseling work, and their absence from the curriculum of many schools is too well reflected in the professions. While social workers and counselors often pick up these skills along the way, the concise, straightforward listing and explication by Middleman and Wood is a better way to go. I think any counselor or social worker would benefit from a review of these basics, and any trainee or intern who has not encountered this book would benefit from it.
