Book Description

November 18, 1991

The key to successful coaching is getting your players to make successful decisions on the field. Skills and Strategies for Coaching Soccer gives you the tools to do just that. You'll have access to 120 drills for teaching skills and techniques; more importantly, you'll know how to develop these skills in realistic game situations with beginning, intermediate, and advanced players.

Essential skills are presented, including collecting and controlling, passing, dribbling, kicking, heading, goalkeeping, and the throw in. But the unique feature of this book is for each skill presented, you'll find drills for players at different levels of development.

And no one knows the importance of skill development better than Alan Hargreaves--one of England's top soccer coaches. He has coached 5-year-olds to pros, using the same skills and techniques presented in this book.

With Skills and Strategies for Coaching Soccer, you'll learn the what, how, and why of soccer through:

- offensive moves and countering defensive moves,
- 120 drills for beginning, intermediate, and advanced players,
- coaching points for each drill,
- a fitness program for soccer,
- sample game situations and how to coach in those situations,
- 246 high-quality illustrations of field diagrams and skill execution, and
- methods of coaching that are appropriate for individuals or groups.

You'll also find information on how the modern systems of soccer play have evolved since 1870 as well as how to be effective with your pre-game, half-time, and post-game talks.

Skills and Strategies for Coaching Soccer is essential for:

- Beginning coaches - will receive a comprehensive introduction to soccer and soccer coaching.
- Team coaches - will have immediate access to new drills, new tactics, and fitness tests used with Olympic players, as well as advice on team management and systems of play.

This hands-on guide will also prove useful for:

- College and university students - will learn all the essentials of coaching soccer effectively.
- Teachers and lecturers - will gain a detailed reference source for new skills and drills to use when preparing their lessons.

Skills and Strategies for Coaching Soccer presents all of this information in a style that combines the concern for the dignity of the individual with a love for the manner in which the game is played. Alan Hargreaves believes in this coaching philosophy--a philosophy that through experience has proven to be effective in producing winning teams.

It's all part of the time-tested formula that makes Skills and Strategies for Coaching Soccer an indispensable guide for soccer coaches in any setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING for the intermediate coach, May 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Skills and Strategies for Coaching Soccer (Paperback)
Absolutely terrific book -- spanning all aspects of team and individual play. I own a number of books -- usually too basic or far too advanced. Hargreaves' book is exceptional in that it takes soccer coaching to a high quality level in terms of both theory and tactics. Probably not the best "first" book for a beginning coach, but great for Under-10 and over (and perhaps U8 advanced play). I'm back to buy additional copies for my assistant coaches. My highest, 5-star recommendation.

I have coached youth rec. soccer for 4 years and own several books on this subject . Alan Hargreaves Skills and Stategies for Coaching Soccer is by far the best book I have , and use the most .It is very clear and concise and unlike several books I've purchased , most all the info and drills are useable .I would not recommend this book for a first time coach . But for a coach that wants to bring their soccer knowlege to the next level . Great book !

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all youth soccer coaches., October 3, 1997

This review is from: Skills and Strategies for Coaching Soccer (Paperback)
I picked this book up about two years ago after I earned my "D" license for coaches from Washington State Youth Soccer Association. This book follows an excellant process for preparing practices in all areas of soccer. It is the most useful book I have read about soccer for use as a coaching manual. Youth coaches are generally new parents to the game and coaching of soccer. They need to be provided with a good manual on how to coach youth soccer. This book provides all the essentials for new and experienced youth coaches to teach players and teams the basic skills and strategies required for young players to develope into exceptional players. I have recommended this book to many new and experienced soccer coaches. They have responded quite well to its value. In fact one coach recommended it to their soccer association (after he read my tatered copy) and the association reviewed the book and provided a free copy to each coach in the club this year. You cannot ask for a more complete soccer coaching manual. I highly recommend that all youth soccer clubs provide this book to their coaches. Thank you for the book, Rick Siler
