A great follow up to "Topaz".,

The name "Skin" comes from the Julius Hemphill composition "Skin 1" recorded on this CD (which also includes Hemphill's "Reflections"). There's a big Hemphill influence running through this recording - the compositions are intricate and skillfully executed; the choices of cover material is great (Mancini, Mingus, Santana). Adventurous music, but not inaccessible.

Just a fantastic expressiveness is in every track, and the styles are mixed up expertly. If you're not used to hearing a cello within this setting, you should definitely check it out as Friedlander simply lays it out there nice and tastefully adventurous. His band is also very versatile and follows him every step of the way. It energizes me everytime I put it on.
