2.0 out of 5 stars Left me limp!
After reading reviews from readers on this site I was excited about enlighting my knowledge on the male and female "goods", but found myself bored within the first couple of chapters. The so called doc - constantly kills the interest with one liners that leave you yearning for nothing. She desperately tries to appear witty and experienced only to come off as a...

This book is a fun, fast read...although in order to fully appreciate the vast amount of information provided by the witty Dr. Hamilton, one might feel compelled to take each chapter slowly. Still, Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves is the kind of book a person can flip through - virtually every page contains stuff about our 'private parts' most of us didn't realize and/or never imagined!

Surprisingly, despite the topic, there's nothing gratuitous or smarmy about this book, it's clearly grounded in academia, written in good taste, and presented with authority (frequently laced in humor) - making it a book I'm not embarrassed to be seen with in public...

Well researched, well written, and well worth reading - I highly recommend Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves to anyone interested in the history of human sexuality, the inner workings of human reproduction, the rationale behind circumcision/ FGM/castration, the role sexual organs play(ed) in religion, silly sex facts...come to think of it, this particular book should appeal to just about anyone in possession of a penis or vagina!

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING & AMUSING...GREAT RESOURCE!!!, February 12, 2004

This review is from: Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves: A Collection of Facts and Fancies, Legends and Oddities About the Body's Private Parts (Paperback)
my background is not dissimilar to that of dr. hamilton's, and, as such, i am often asked to recommend reading material (by students and clients alike) related to the subject of human sexuality. rarely have i come across something so well-compiled as Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves. my goodness, the research is nothing short of phenomenal -- allowing the author to fill her pages with rich, full and, i might add, entertaining content.

a number of my students have not only found this book enlightening, but impetus for further study (as least in regard to the broader subject of human sexuality and it's role in psychology/society) especially important is the fact that this particular volume covers both genders--something no other offering in this field can boast.

i readily give "Skin Flutes & Velvet Glove" a 5+ star rating because it supplies a substantial and impressive amount of information in a well-written and amusing fashion. i hope dr. hamilton will continue to impart her unique, intelligent 'voice' upon those of us who find her works so delightful. how nice to read something that is just...so nicely written, so full of wonderful information, and so capable of giving us more than a few laughs along the way!! BRAVO!

5.0 out of 5 stars How much fun was this? Well, let me tell you..., August 2, 2002
This is the end-all, totally agreeable ...book. A truly fun and informative read. And, if you are like me, with the proverbial mind's eye, that pictures whatever is being digested through the auditory and ocular senses; well then, you'll find this tome better than most big screen movies. But, then again, the illustrations within it are marvelous, as refined and elegant as the literary style.

As previously noted by the other reviewers, Skin Flutes and Velvet Gloves is an entertaining thumb through and equally compelling slow study. So sit back, relax, and open yourself to some new ideas, interesting trivia, and perhaps some erotic day dreaming. Dr. Terri Hamilton did an extraordinary job! I'd like to shake her hand, as well as pick her brain. Indeed, she is a woman who knows her stuff. So, where is the next book?

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally enjoyable, June 20, 2002

This is a great book. It gives a lot of information. Some of it I was familiar with, and other stuff was new to me. My fiance liked it too.
I liked also how it gave the slang terms as well as the "correct" terms for the genitals. I think it would be a good book for an older teen, say 15 or 16. It's not an introductory book by any means, but gives an honest openminded look at the male and female body.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Sexual History, March 26, 2002
By
A O Cazola (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
The history of sex is a commonly written about topic. But it has never been collected in such a way as Skin Flutes and Velvet Gloves. Dr Terri hamilton has divided the book up ointo sections based on gender and habit. There are large sections for the penis and the vagina with smaller sections on such practices as circumcision, shaving and piercing.

Skin Flutes is a thoroughly researched historical guide to the body's nether regions. Each section begins with a historical perspective on certain body parts or sexual practices and then traces the origins and development of traditions right up to the modern day.

Witty and informative without resorted to schoolyard snickering or locker room crudeness, Skin Flutes is a great conversation piece and a good addition to any nonfiction library.

The glossary of terms can also act as a great thesaurus for afterdinner conversation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Surprise!!!, October 10, 2002
I have to admit I was a little leery after receiving the book as a gift, but literally couldn't put it down once I cracked it open. Incredibly entertaining, the book is filled with hundreds of nuggets - for example, who knew men had a "G-spot" of their own? Or that the custom of carrying a lucky rabbits foot reportedly began as a fertility ritual 2500 years ago. Beyond the fun facts, however, I also found the book to be enlightening overall and highly educational. It is filled with historical foundation and perspective for many of today's sexual taboos, customs, and even hang-ups. Well-written and researched. A great read!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask!, July 12, 2003

This review is from: Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves: A Collection of Facts and Fancies, Legends and Oddities About the Body's Private Parts (Paperback)
This book is hilarious! Dr. Hamilton is as humorous as she is serious and factual in presenting the sometimes awkward subject of sex and genitals. This is not material covered in Med. School for sure. I learned more from this book than I've ever learned from any medical text, "street knowledge" or "sex ed." Dr. Hamilton has written a fun, humorous, fact-filled book about almost anything and everything one has ever wondered about the organs between our legs. Because of her use of the coloquial and straight-forward, no nonsense talk approach of the subject matter...I wouldn't recommend this as a "sex ed." book for teens as much as I would recommend that every parent own a copy of this book to be better educated on the subject matter. This book is written with wit, humor and facts in a very comfortable format...While the title may be vulgar to some...the book is anything but. I enjoyed this read with a smile and occassional belly laugh, mainly because Dr. Hamilton presented answers or facts to questions I thought were too warped to ever contemplate finding an answer to. I highly recommend this book for anyone remotely curious about their private parts (or other's for that matter!).

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST BOOK about SEX and SEX ODDITIES ever!, April 25, 2002
By
Dr. Hamilton's keen intellect and sharp wit has delivered a magnetizing commentary on the curious side of (human) sexuality. She puts "stretch marks" in the word "normal" in revealing the oddities and curious components of our impulse to pleasure ourselves, others or many, using what ever tool, apparatus or bus to get us there from here. And, besides, the pictures are tantalizing. It is no wonder that mankind rests atop the food chain with time on his (her) hands to pursue ways to smile. This remarkable book will rub you the right way and you'll be the more informed for it. Haven't you ever wondered when vibrators came into being and why so many men wanted to become doctors......? Your local hardware store will take on a whole new meaning....It is "The Book" own to learn about you .......MG

5.0 out of 5 stars Skin Flutes and Velvet Gloves, December 17, 2003

In spite of its price (new hardcover), this book was well worth it. I'm currently reading it for the second time. I own many books on genitalia, and this is by far the best. I liked the mix of facts and fun. It's an historical treasure for anyone wanting to research the topic. The "Dicktionary" and the bibliography are particularly useful. Dr. Hamilton is to be commended for this very useful (and entertaining) book!
