4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing
Every woman with a guitar and a fierce spirit need not be compared to Ani DiFranco.

Does Melissa Ferrick sound like early Ani? Yes.

So, sue her. The world doesn't and should not revolve around Ani DiFranco. Should we never have another male, poetic, prolific singer songwriter because we had Bob Dylan? Absolutely not. Would there have been Ani DiFranco without...

2.0 out of 5 stars Melani Ferrfranco
"People ask me if I was the class clown in school and I say, 'No. But I sat next to him, and I studied him.'" - Dr. Alan Pearl (Eugene Levy) in Waiting For Guffman

Melissa Ferrick is nothing but the lesbian, still-playing-slash-and-burn-guitar alternative to the now softly-strumming, married Ani DiFranco. In fact, I'd wager that she counts her her main...

Would there have been Ani DiFranco without Joni Mitchell or Patti Smith? Sure, Ferrick echoes the early days of Ani, and I like that about her. She talks about subjects Ani talked about...politics and love. Since when does Ani DiFranco own the trademarks on those subjects?

I also do not fault Melissa Ferrick for being aware of Ani, for realizing that there is a new crowd of people who want to hear powerful songs from a powerful woman. I've heard Melissa work Ani songs into her show, in snippets and bits -- she does not hide from the comparisons, nor should she. Melissa tours, and tours, and tours, playing bars and clubs and colleges and festivals and getting better at it by the day. She has taken songs from her over-produced major label cds and turned them into rip-roarin' anthems live. Melissa Ferrick is in the clubs, talking to fans, playing colleges, and bringing another powerful, talented voice to the barren lands of female rockers. God Forbid we have someone playing live music for fans who might sound a little bit like Ani DiFranco. I'll support independent artists like Melissa, and her take-no-prisoners approach to music and business forever, and Ani DiFranco, and her ability to reinvent her styles and try new things, critics-be-damned. I feel no need to pin them against each other, or to say that any woman with a guitar, emotive, powerful lyrics, and a fiery spirit is inconsequential because Ani has already graced us.

Like Living in Clip? Then buy Skinnier-Faster-Live. Then go see Melissa in concert--you absolutely, positively, will not be disappointed. Highlight songs include "The Stranger," "North Carolina," "Willing to Wait," and "Everything I Need."

4.0 out of 5 stars Album - 5 stars, packaging 4 stars, May 5, 2003

I was disappointed when I first opened it -- 25 bucks for a cardboard flip case double-cd? That's the worst part of it, though.

THE REST ROCKS. The guitar is powerful and she's true to the fantastic songs she is known for while changing them just enough for the nice "you're-there-live" concert-feel of the set.

And regardless, "Drive" will still make you sweat, ahem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful LIVE Melissa, March 12, 2001
This review is from: Skinnier Faster Live at the Bpc (Audio CD)
This album is a collection of Melissa's songs, from old to new, on a LIVE CD that really showcases the singers talent for performing on stage. Not many other musicians have the ability to gather up such enthusiasm... such raw energy.. and such beauty in a live performance as Melissa does, and this album really shows that talent. Melissa's funny stories and little snipits of talk are very fascinating and charming. I would reccommend this album to anyone who loves live rock/folk music!

5.0 out of 5 stars already a huge ferrickhead..., July 2, 2001
This review is from: Skinnier Faster Live at the Bpc (Audio CD)
i'm already a huge fan of melissa ferrick, in fact, she is my favorite singer-songwriter. but what you will gain from listening to this album is the fact that this woman can rock. she has an infinite knowledge of guitar, and songs that knock you off your feet. i love this cd because it captures her live performances like nothing else she's released. i especially like it because it showcases her acoustic sound, since she recently joined up with drummer brian winton, you don't get much of that from live shows. my favorite thing about seeing her live is the intensity that carries the show, she gets really into her music and it's just INCREDIBLE. So if you can't get yourself to a live show, buy this album. If you've already been, chances are she's won you over and you already have it :)

5.0 out of 5 stars My First Melissa CD....., January 7, 2005
By
This review is from: Skinnier Faster Live at the Bpc (Audio CD)
This was the first Melissa Ferrick CD I bought....several years back. I loved the second CD, and didn't know what I was missing on the first one. Someone else commented about how "Drive" makes them sweat. I say, if you can make it though the song with out totally giving in, then there is something wrong with you. This CD set is an accurate representation of her live show, with all the emotion and intensity. Nothing could beat seeing her in concert, but this is the next best thing. "The Stranger" enchanted me..and the rest is history! This is one of my favorite albums. I don't go too far without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweeeetness!!!, May 10, 2004

I have been a fan for a few years now, after I tripped across a burned cd of her music. I have since bought all but one of her cds, but this remains my favorite (although I'm sure the other new live one is great). If you haven't seen Melissa Ferrick live you MUST. I saw her at the University of Washington for my first time last year and have anxiously awaited seeing her again, which I will tonight. She has the intensity and talent of a true rockstar, in her own sense. Anyway, buy the album and you WILL NOT be disappointed.

Okay, if you're a Ferrickhead and you DON'T have this CD, go out and buy it RIGHT NOW. I mean, RIGHT. NOW. Since I have become a fan of Melissa Ferrick about a month ago, I have purchased 4 of her CDs and listened to them ALL extensively. I would have to say that this CD is the best of all of the ones that I have. This album is a crucial addition to your Melissa Ferrick collection. Or just your music collection in general. This CD embodies all the passion and energy that makes Melissa Ferrick's live shows the best live experience you will ever have. From her random scat and humming with the music to her chatter with the audience, you can't NOT listen to it all the way through. This is a great mix of upbeat lyrics and frantic guitar playing and slower, more mellow songs. GET IT NOW!
