5.0 out of 5 stars Gets a bad rap from short-sighted reviewers, September 3, 2008
This review is from: Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven: A Gutsy Guide to Becoming One Hot (and Healthy) Mother! (Paperback)
I don't know what the other reviewers are complaining about: this book was not dedicated to animal welfare and was not a PETA advertisement.

Yes, there was talk about slaughterhouses, but this was only one part. And the point of slaughterhouse parts is that you are consuming the fear and grief of the animal through the form of chemicals they release. Not to mention the animals living conditions are disgusting and have the potential to contaminate your food--which you are feeding to your unborn baby.

The book focuses more on the quality of the food products you put in your body. The authors advocate a vegan diet not only because of the condition of farms animals but because it's good for your body. It focuses mainly on the dangers of dairy and disproving most pro-dairy advertisements, pointing to the huge economic impact of the dairy industry as the main reason why the government pushes dairy on the public.

The authors also disapprove of caffeine, alcohol, and artificial and refined sugars, particularly during pregnancy and discuss these substances' affects on an unborn baby. I also found the chapter on breastfeeding particularly interesting and helpful. I had decided not to breastfeed but after reading this chapter, reviewing their research, and talking to my doctor, I have changed my mind and decided to breastfeed/use a breast pump.

Overall this was an informative and interesting book. It gives a lifestyle during pregnancy that is very cautious, and thus I believe this is what really upset the over reviewers--that they didn't want to have to change their lifestyle. But what better time to be so careful with your body than when you're pregnant with your baby!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brave & Honest, October 9, 2010
This review is from: Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven: A Gutsy Guide to Becoming One Hot (and Healthy) Mother! (Paperback)
I would ditch the negative reviews on this one, when considering whether or not to read this book, ladies. Skinny Bitch: Bun in the Oven, does take a frank & truthful approach to exposing the truth about America's current methods of food production. And I understand the fear & outrage of those who post negative reviews here, which they all seem to be basing on disdain for the vegan ethic. We fear what we don't understand. And I mean that compassionately. However, many of those w/ such posts, seem to be answering to arguments which are never actually presented in the book. The highly defensive & dismissive nature of these posted comments is rather telling. At no time do the authors attempt to demonize those who practice a standard American diet. Mom's are not their enemy-- moms & babies are who they are advocating for. The powers they are tempting to take on/expose, do not have the interests of moms, babies, or the planet in mind. Nor do they attempt to tell these women that their children are going to be irreparably damaged if they do not practice veganism. They are, however, speaking truth to the powerful corporate system, which is making our children VERY SICK. This book was written, in my very humble opinion, to tell women a truth most Americans have had kept from them for a very long time. And whether or not veganism is for you, remember-- those who chose to be vegan, or encourage that lifestyle, are hurting no one. This diet, when practiced mindfully, treads very easily on our earth. And as mothers, don't we all want a healthier world for our little ones? This book may seem radical to some, but in the words of someone quite wise-- "to be radical is to grasp things by the root". And I'm grateful to the authors for their sassy & whimsical wit. Thanks, b*tches.

4.0 out of 5 stars This was a good read for vegan women, September 11, 2008

This review is from: Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven: A Gutsy Guide to Becoming One Hot (and Healthy) Mother! (Paperback)
I found this book fun to read simply because there are NO current day books out there that focus on veganism and pregnancy.

I also understand the authors "style" of writing, so their cursing and "in your face" approach didn't really bother me because I knew what to expect.

A fews things you may have to be concerned with is:

1) that this book's audience is most likely middle class people who live in locations where a whole foods vegan diet is "easy". I question how feasible any whole foods diet is (vegan or omnivorous) for people who are the working poor in this country and located in areas such as the inner city, in which there have been a plethora of public health reports indicating that there are no farmer's markets, natural grocers, or health options available.

2) this book kind of assumes all pregnant women reading this book are straight and married to a man. If you are lesbian identified woman, the heterosexual oriented nature of the book may irk you. If you are a single woman looking to become pregnant or are already pregnant, it may irk you a bit.

However, I commend that fact that the authors wrote this book, simply because NO ONE ELSE IS providing current books on how to achieve a healthy vegan pregnancy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Women!!, September 2, 2008

These girls get mad props for exposing the truth behind the food we eat. Most people don't realize that the dairy & meat industry spend millions and millions on advertising and lobbyists to convince people that unhealthy food is actually healthy. These girls report the truth, backed by peer reviewed published medical studies (the real science & information that doesn't have millions to compete with meat & dairy industries). If you or anyone you know is pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant - this book is essential! If you care about your baby you can't ignore these facts. Bonus is that these authors are damn funny!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious... Good advice, March 16, 2009
This review is from: Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven: A Gutsy Guide to Becoming One Hot (and Healthy) Mother! (Paperback)
I got this book for my daughter who is pregnant. She enjoyed reading it and it has really changed her food lifestyle for the better. The book gives sound nutritional advice and real eye-opening information on how meat is produced in this country. The foul language is really a bit much, but the book is funny and helpful. If you are pregnant, and weight is an issue for you, or maybe you have some other food related issues like gestational diabetes, reading this book could really help. But beware the F-Bombs! ;)

Very cute and funny book. Good tips on healthy eating to gain only the weight needed. Some slightly radical ideas about milk, dairy, and meat - but all in all a good book

4.0 out of 5 stars Pregnancy book, December 23, 2008
This review is from: Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven: A Gutsy Guide to Becoming One Hot (and Healthy) Mother! (Paperback)
Pregnancy in itself is an event in a womans life that is evaluated differently with each individual. Some women feel beautiful when they are pregnant and others feel like a huge misshapen creature...With that said, pregnancy can be a beautiful experience or it can be a painful experience that will carry on even after the birth of your child. This book will help you know what to eat to have a healthy pregnancy experience and a healthy child, while at the same time give you reassurance with your vision of your body and all the changes that occur during and after pregnancy. This book is very informative and also very well written. I would suggest this book be an addition to all the other goodies one places in the ever popular "BABY BASKET" that so many people including myself bring to the baby showers. I give this book 4 stars, and will be purchasing many for upcoming baby showers.Remember to share the good stuff with expectant mothers too,not just the "up all night "stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great research & background for why you should avoid certain foods, September 19, 2011
By
This review is from: Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven: A Gutsy Guide to Becoming One Hot (and Healthy) Mother! (Paperback)
Although I have not (and probably never will) adopt the vegan lifestyle, this book gives serious background and research on why you should avoid dairy, meat, sugar, caffeine, etc. not only when pregnant but all the time. I found this book a little less abrasive than the original Skinny Bitch book and would recommend to anyone wanting to eat healthier and better for your body.

4.0 out of 5 stars Honest pregnancy advice, September 22, 2008
This review is from: Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven: A Gutsy Guide to Becoming One Hot (and Healthy) Mother! (Paperback)
This is a great book for information on being a healthy prego. If you have read Skinny Bitch some of the chapters can be skipped since they are repeated and I honestly didn't want to read about animal abuse again. I do wish this book would focus exclusively on pregnancy when it seems alot was just rewritten for a new book. I also wish they had talked about possible interference of hormones with soy products during pregnancy. I recommend this book though along with Bitch in the Kitch.

1.0 out of 5 stars Judgmental and ill-informed, January 23, 2011
This review is from: Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven: A Gutsy Guide to Becoming One Hot (and Healthy) Mother! (Paperback)
Other reviewers have noted that the authors cherry pick from results of studies and present incomplete data to substantiate their views.

I absolutely believe that one can maintain a healthy vegan diet during pregnancy, but idiotic books like this one could lead people to believe that all arguments in support of a vegan diet are a crock.

I had been a vegan for many years and have one child. These women are ridiculous - neither seems to have an MD, and neither has a child. I resent these nasty, judgmental women telling me I should "suck it up and breastfeed" when they have no clue how emotionally and physically tolling the postpartum period can be. I did "suck it up and breastfeed" but I would never, ever tell anyone else what to do in regard to breastfeeding because I know firsthand how difficult it can be.

Lots of their advice runs against current research - for example, there is no evidence that light to moderate caffeine consumption (under 200 mg/day) increases likelihood of miscarriage. They insist, in CAPITAL LETTERS, no less, that you give up caffeine during pregnancy. My goodness, pregnancy is so tiring and difficult - why make it harder by cutting out something that is harmless in reasonable amounts?

They also make logical leaps - because "just two drinks per day" can cause birth defects, you are basically abusing your child if you drink one glass of wine during your pregnancy. If you want to say that drinking one glass of wine is harmful, cite something saying that one glass of wine is harmful. It's like saying that you shouldn't ever take an advil, because if you take the whole bottle you can overdose. It really makes no sense.

As an alternative to this asinine read, I would recommend the Panic Free Pregnancy.
