Book Description

October 31, 2006

From the cover of Essence to the stage at the Apollo, from reruns of her hit show The Parkers to her reality program Mo'Nique's F.A.T. Chance, Mo'Nique exults in the joys of being a large woman. Here, she explores the great love of her life—food. But this isn't food South Beach diet style. This is food with flavor, from chocolate and cream to sugar and butter and everything in between.

In Skinny Cooks Can't Be Trusted, Mo'Nique's fondest food memories (like her mama's stuffed fish that blew up in the oven but made it to the table anyway) are accompanied by cooking tips (when in doubt, taste it to make sure), food strategies (gather everything in one place so you don't tire yourself out runnin' around the kitchen), and "what to wear if you're gonna go there" (because if done right, good food can lead to good lovin'!).

4.0 out of 5 stars Love Mo'Nique... June 5, 2007
By joeqe
Format:Hardcover
...love the book, and love the recipes.

But beware of the portion sizes! The spaghetti casserole recipe (which is delicious, btw) calls for 2 pounds of spaghetti and, according to the recipe, serves FOUR! Ya gotta have a BIG appetite to eat that much spaghetti!

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time or Money!!!! August 19, 2007
By R. Rush
Format:Hardcover
The book was part autobiography which made it interesting. I am a big girl and a great cook. I can tell that most of these recipes have not been tested. The measurements and the cooking times are way off. This book is not for beginners--an experienced cook will know to adjust the recipes. I was considering purchasing this cookbook but I decided to get it from the library first. I am so glad I did. I like the fact that Mo'nique is representin' the big girls--but she is not representin' in the kitchen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dont bother with this one January 3, 2007
Format:Hardcover
I was so disappointed with this book. There may have been one or two recipes that were decent, but the majority weren't even worth reading. Apparently Monique can't cook and if she can she didn't include those recipes. I wasted my money on this one. There are so many excellent cookbooks out there.....Morgan Freeman and Friends is an example. This was a pathetic attempt at making money based on her fame.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, whimsical set of recipes February 2, 2007
Format:Hardcover
Mo'Nique maintains that being a large woman is a joy, so "Skinny Cooks Can't Be Trusted" turns out to be a predictable celebration of what foods make the large woman large. Her fondest food memories - such as a mother's stuffed fish that blew up in the oven - are accompanied by cooking tips, easy recipes, black and white photos (and a centerfold of color) and culinary options certain to intrigue and delight a wide audience of fans. A fun, whimsical set of recipes ties to themes and will intrigue a wide audience of kitchen cooks and homestyle chefs - especially those with an affection for Mo'Nique's style.

5.0 out of 5 stars scrumptious November 20, 2006
Format:Hardcover
This is an easy to follow cook book. You won't run into any of the complex issues you do with a lot of cook books out there. Patti Labelle has a wonderful cook book but Monique is giving Ms. Patti some competition. I love the recipes with foods i'm familiar with. I will be trying a lot of them. There are no secret ingredients you have to go to another country to get everything is made with everyday seasonings and items you could find at your local grocer. i love the stories they cracked me up and made me reflect on my own family. keep em coming MONIQUE!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this cookbook July 22, 2007
Format:Hardcover
I too saw this book on Vh1 and couldn't resist. The recipes are so delicious and most are easy to make and not to complicated. The portion sizes are big but I cook for a large family so they are perfect!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mo'--YOU THE WOMAN, GIRLFRIEND!!! November 19, 2006
By Lady T
Format:Hardcover
This is a great cookbook, and easy read with simple receipes, especially for the NEW COOK, such as myself. This cookbook is very diverse with soul food receipes, comfort food receipes, seafood receipes & West Indian receipes... and did I tell you it's an EASY READ? The receipes are not difficult to follow at all, and most of the ingredients you should already have in your pantry!! I love the authenticy of this book, as not only did Mo'Nique share special moments in her life with her hubby and kids, but, she also brought in stories about her girlfriends and her family; and being the family oriented person I am, I truly enjoyed the stories; and Mo's stories were of course told with humor, which is FANTASTIC, because after all laughter keeps you young!! Again the recipes are wonderful, and I can't wait to start preparing and having my sweet hubby sample... after all he was the one who purchased this book for my 31st birthday, so, I gotta repay him with some good eatin'!!! Mo'Nique, if you're reading this review... GOOD JOB MY FABULOUS & THICK SISTA!!!!!
