Different techniques include reverse applique from Linda Pool, circular couching from Carol Taylor, log cabin blocks from Marti Michell, crazy quilt patches and fantasy flowers from Yvonne Porcella, layered landscapes from Karen Eckmeier and a wool felt project from Elly. --The Professional Quilter, Spring 2008

How many times have you wanted to give a quilted gift but only thought in terms of a bed-sized version? I know when I say quilt, I think of something that will take a minimum of a month to make. With SKINNY QUILTS AND TABLE RUNNERS, you can move your quilted gift thinking from LARGE to something smaller but is still a quilted gift.

There are 15 different projects to make. Each is as colorful and unique as the next so everyone should find something that fits the needs of the "gift of the moment". They are as simple as a strip block with a couple of borders to one with lots of appliqué to a cutwork runner.

Each project is shown with a colorful photo of the finished project. A materials list that covers fabric as well as any other tool/supply needed is given. Cutting details as listed and assembling instructions are clear and easy to follow. There are graphics to help explain the instructions too. Templates are provided and finishing how-to's make up the final parts of the directions for the project.

There is a section on quilting basics for those moments when you say "How do I do that?" Don't forget to read about each designer and the editor in the "About the Designers" section. And if you need to locate any of the supplies, there is a resource page. And just so you don't think this book is only for small projects, remember to think "BIG". Each small project can be made into a bed-sized quilt by simply making more squares!

I must admit I picked this book up with some doubt - aren't there enough table runner patterns and books already? But I was immediately astonished with the variety and originality of the quilts in this book. The list of contributors itself is very impressive and includes such quilt world luminaries as Kaffe Fassett, Jane Sassaman & Laura Wasilowski.
There are a full 15 patterns in the book and each quilt is shown in full frontal view and on display in a home setting. I particular love the vertical seashore landscape quilt, hanging on a green wall just the same color as in my front hall. I can even see one of these quilts hanging horizontally over the back of my sofa.
There are numerous techniques shown, including traditional piecing, raw edge appliqué, couching with fibers, wool felt appliqué and others. The instructions are clear and full size templates are given for the appliqués. This book is a worthwhile addition to any quilters collection.

Haven't had time to begin "playing" with the ideas yet but I can hardly wait! In addition, my taste is traditional or transitional but my daughter's taste is very contemporary and rich so I've not been able to create useful items she would actually use in her home. This book has several and I'm sure she'll be delighted!

I bought this book from Carol Taylor, one of the quilt artists, while I was taking a class from her learning to make the quilt on the cover. The class was wonderful and I'm glad I bought the book but . . . the rest of the quilts in the book are somewhat dull and uninteresting compared to the cover quilt. Had I not been in the class, I would not have bought the book.

I bought this book because of one particular picture that was featured on another website, and discovered an entire book full of contemporary quilting projects. If you like quilting or fabric decor, this book is for you. The directions are written clearly, and the materials are clearly spelled out. There are both tabletop projects and wall decor projects in the book; mostly contemporary styles. I know I will use it for years to come.

Good book-great pictures and easy to follow instructions. Great for a quick project, or to use to expand into other larger quilts.

Flip through this book and you will know this is definitely not your typical runner book. The skinny quilts are designed by a number of well-known quilt designers, and as a result, there is a wonderful variety of styles and techniques taught in this book. I've already made "By the Sea" by Karen Eckmeier. The instructions are clear, the photos are wonderful, and I LOVE my finished product. I have already purchased Skinny Quilts & table runners II, and I will definately be making more projects from these two books.

I really enjoy a book that offers many options and this one delivers ! I love working with wool and there is a lovely tablerunner that uses gorgeous felted wool. Another very modern design that looks wonderful on the wall. The techniques are varied and can be used interchangably. You won't be disappointed in the photography either. A lovely book with projects that can be completed quickly...my kind of book !
