ATL is at it again!!! Slimm Cutta as entered the game.,

It took me a hot minute to really get into the vibe that this CD offered. "Too much Outkast like", "not enough Outkast collaborations" were some of the criticisms I gave this kat. Then after a long drive with nothing but this CD on hand, hey . . . . Calhoun simply rips this debut to shreds. My first mistake was comparing it to anything. This kat represents ATL to the fullest. Not that simple rhyme flow that often comes from the south, but mind blowing metaphors and tight flows with the smoothest southern slang in the game. With Big Boi and Andre3000 backing him up on the Aquemini label, Calhoun can't seem to go wrong here at all. He first came to the game on past Dungeon Family collaborations and now it's his turn to shine in the rap game. With past success from Ludicris & Outkast, the hip-hop world seems to be awaiting the next ATL hit and I believe Calhoun is it. This is not your normal dirty south MC coming on some thugged out BS. Slimm brings true skill to the game. SOMETHING DIFFERENT than the norm is always appealing to my ears and Slimm Calhoun offers plenty of everything on this one. Fav tracks: (2)RED CLAY (what yall no bout dat red clay), (4)WELL, (6)IT AIN'T EASY (Backbone has a tight verse), (7,8,& 9!!) put those three on repeat and that dirty south banga (15) ON THE GRIND. tight tight CD oNe

Slimm Cutta Calhoun delivers a smash debut. As The first artist to sign to Outkast's label Aquemini Records, he establishes himself as a tight southern rapper with an attitude. I first heard Slimm on some other songs but mainly on Outkasts Gangsta [ISH] from Stankonia but he wasn't nearly as good rapping there as he is on this album. Slimm has plenty of lyrical skills to go around. He raps about wack emcees, females, thug and pimp stuff you know the same ol topics, but it is the way he delivers them. Packed with a smooth flow and compelling voice backed by Organized Noize and Earthtone III, Slimm Cutta Calhoun is his own artist and separates himself from the clichéd rappers out today. As with almost any Dirty South album, the album is packed with many anthems and tight hooks making it easy to digest. The production is top notch as well but you wouldn't expect anything less than excellence with the Dungeon Family. The playability is also off the chain as you can play the cd the whole way through ( save for the intro which is pointless) and never skip a single song. This cd is most likely the best Southern debut since Youngbloodz Against Da Grain in 99. Every song on here is near perfect and most of them are excellent. You don't feel a need to skip songs at all. My favorite songs include the first single It's OK which is sonic bliss. It's amazing this song was slept on. Another tight cut has to be The Cut Song. This song is just pimp tight. The video for the song destroyed it because it was not a good video but this is one of the better songs produced by Earthtone III. Other hit songs include Well, Timelock, Dirt Work, The Skinny [the most mellowed out song], Characters- a superior chorus, Worldly Ways-getting political. My favorite song has to be How Much Can I featuring Sleepy Brown. The instrumental is so settling and calm and Sleepy Brown is butter on the breakfast toast. This song will get comparisons to the instrumental Funky Ride off Outkast's first offering SouthernPlayalisticCadillacMuzik. This song is so tight. To Conclude, The Skinny is one of the best debuts of 2001 and easily one of the best albums of the year. If you like Dirty South music, Dungeon Family, or any affiliated artists you should definitely give Slimm a listen...you won't be disappointed.

Many would expect the new Slimm Calhoun which is produced mostly by Earthtone III to sound alot like Stankonia but this album has its own unique souns and spirit to itself. Slimm got dirty for this album and i don't mean just lyically dirty I mean the beats tha content and the flow. This album represents ATL and specifically College Park just like when Outkast dropped Southernplayalistik. There is a new breed of emcees in the ATL and Slimm is showing you how they come wit it. Standout tracks include It's Ok, Dirt Work, and The Cut Song but overall all the track are tight. I recomend this to everyone who likes the Outkast sound. Let's all get down and DIRTY.

The standout songs are "It's OK" and "The Cut Song", which were both in heavy rotation on Rap City. Again, I only got this album because he's on OutKast's label. This album isn't really any different from a lot of the Dirty South albums you hear today but if you're dying to complete your Dungeon Family collection (this album is slightly better than Backbone's album), check it out. Slimm has a tight flow but I'll wait for his next album to hear some really raw tunes.

I first time I heard Slimm was on that Outkast song 'Gangsta S**t' and thought his rhymes and voice were pretty tight. So anyway last week I saw 'The Skinny' sitting at one of the listening stations at Virgin records megastore, so I decided to listen to it. Well the whole first half of the CD blew me away. I bought it, needless to say, (not at Virgin, though :) ) and I have to say that it's easily the best hip-hop CD I've heard this year. The CD has both really slammin club-type jams and also some really tight, ambient, mellow songs. It doesn't come across as really schizophrenic production though - for some reason it all fits together perfect and just works. If you haven't heard any of the songs off this CD, you have got to check out "It's OK", "Timelock", "This Young G", "Lil Buddy", and "It Ain't Easy". That should give you a feel of what this CD is about. Honestly I think even many of the non-singles on this CD are better than a lot of the hip-hop on the radio right now.

Slim is tight. The bass bumps nicely and his lyrics go well with it. Definitely represents the ATL Sound. Buy it, No Doubt!!

GREAT DEBUT ALBUM FROM SLIMM,
By DAVE RITTENHOUSE (lancaster pa) - See all my reviews

This is a surprisingly good debut cd from slimm...though the cd is unique in its own way it has a constant outkast flavor running throughout, which is greatly appreciated by any outkast fan!...also slimm can kind of remind the listener of a snoop dog type sound(and looks)....one negative is the lack of andre and boi...the each appear once on their separate tracks..i guess they didnt want to overshadow slimm with their fame, but the listener would greatly appreciate outkast to appear together on one track....many different sounding tracks throughout the cd, many with very catchy choruses, other more mellow songs such as my little buddy, are also a nice touch....overall if you like outkast pick up this debut from slimm calhoun, look for the dungeon family compilation cd to surface soon!!!

this album is terrible. I should have known it wasn't going to be Dungeon Fam. caliber, but I could have tuned into BET if I wanted to hear this stuff. I thought it might at least be close to some of the old outkast or DF stuff, but I would compare it more to the crap thats on the radio these days. If you're a fan of Nelly, Dem Franchise Boys, or any other radio rapper, you'll probably really enjoy this. If you're looking for some good southern hiphop with some originality, this isn't going to satisfy you.
