Sammo Hung in top form! And more imitations of Bruce Lee!, July 12, 2008
This review is from: Skinny Tiger and Fatty Dragon (DVD)
This could be considered sort of a sequel to Enter the Fat Dragon. It doesn't feature the constant worship of Bruce Lee, but Sammo does fight and act the same way that he did in Enter the Fat Dragon. Sammo and Karl Maka star as cops who try to do their job well, but they are just a little too ready to fight with people. They end up getting in trouble and are fired. But they still want to bust a drug dealer. I don't know why I'm explaining the story, because it doesn't even matter. This movie is nonstop comedy and fighting. The comedy is good at times, though nothing great. The fights on the other hand are magnificent. Sammo must have been using some type of performance enhancement, because a fat man should not be able to move like that. All of the fights are good, and I mean really good. The only thing I was disappointed with was at the end where Mark Houghton and Sammo square off, and the fight seems to be cut way short. I've heard that there is a rare longer version of this movie that has the full fight scene, so I am going to have to track that down.
4/5
The Mei Eh DVD has pretty good picture quality and subtitles.

fun, fascist fight-fest!, September 12, 2011
This review is from: Skinny Tiger and Fatty Dragon (DVD)
Karl Maka and the magnificent Sammo Hung play Skinny and Fatty, respectively. Two dedicated Hong Kong cops out to nail a drug kingpin. Though they have the best intentions, their ability to follow procedure would make the L.A.P.D. cringe. Their efficiency in infuriating their superior officers and beating the tar out of suspects, however, is unparalleled.
There's not much else to explain as far as plot. Just shenanigans and fights, really. There is more to it but I'm certainly not going to get into it! The important thing to remember is that a lot of the gags are actually funny and that ALL of the fights are good. Karl Maka doesn't perform any real martial arts, but handles himself very well and is believable. Sammo, on the other hand, is a spin-kicking machine! I've ALWAYS been impressed by his size-to-athleticism ratio and, having an idea of what to expect, was still surprised! He lays off the acrobatics of his younger days but leaves no doubt he could still perform them if called upon! And yes, this is one of the films where Sammo adopts a handful of Bruce Lee mannerisms, first exhibited in "Enter the Fat Dragon" (1978).
The DVD from Mei Ah Entertainment has good picture quality but NO English dub or special features. The language selection consists of Cantonese or Mandarin with subtitles available in Chinese (traditional or simplified) and English. If you enjoy martial arts films in general and Sammo Hung films in particular then this is for you! Lacks only a good, lengthy one-on-one fight. Otherwise, pretty groovy and recommended.

EXCELLENT!, September 2, 2011

Sammo's impersonation of Bruce Lee is excellent! Sammo is truly the best imitator of Bruce. The comedy was good in this movie as well. If you are a Sammo hung fan this is a must see!
