Seen before in The Burning Season , Joe Hannibal is an old-fashioned private eye who smokes cigarettes, drinks bourbon, beds beautiful dames and hews to an old-fashioned code of ethics. That code is sorely threatened when Hannibal is asked by elegant 1950s TV star Henry Foxwood to probe the possible link between the murders of two porn-video stars. Foxwood is Hannibal's client of record, but it's soon clear that certain "concerned individuals" behind Foxwood's "troupe" are Mafia. Grudgingly taking the case, in short order Hannibal receives threats from a capo'sital unnec. per web. nasty nephew, kills a thug and maims a pimp (both in self-defense) and finds himself becoming emotionally involved with the capo's beautiful British mistress. Before Hannibal names the not-too-surprising killer, a third murder and some engaging characters (including the Norman Rockwell farm couple who host the porn-shoots) maintain our interest in this readable mystery from the editor of Hardboiled magazine.

More About the Author

Wayne Dundee grew up and spent the first fifty years of his life around the state line area of northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin. Always an avid reader,he decided at an early age that one day he wanted to be a writer himself. Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer influenced the direction his writing would initially take -- hardboiled detective mysteries.

Dundee sold his first short story, featuring Rockford, Illinois-based PI Joe Hannibal, in 1982. Since then there have been, to date, over twenty Hannibal short stories, three novellas, and seven Hannibal novels. The Hannibal books and stories have been published in several languages and nominated for an Edgar, an Anthony, and six Shamus Awards. The most recent Hannibal novel, GOSHEN HOLE, appeared in December of 2011.
Dundee has recently also gained acclaim for his work in the Western genre. His 2010 short story "This Old Star" received the Peacemaker Award from the Western Fictioneers writers' organization. His first Western novels --- DISMAL RIVER and HARD TRAIL TO SOCORRO --- appeared in 2011. And his most recent, MANHUNTER'S MOUNTAIN, came out in January of 2012.

In 2009, Dundee retired as general manager for a small manufacturing facility and is now devoting full time to writing. Subsequent to the passing of his beloved wife Pam, Dundee shares a home in Ogallala, Nebraska, with his daughter and her family. He is working on further Joe Hannibal adventures as well as more work in the Western genre.

This is a tough, gritty, sexy thriller set against the backdrop of X-rated film-making and the myriad interests involved. Some of these interests are relatively harmless, merely participants looking to satisfy their exhibitionist tendencies, make some money on the side, and perhaps launch careers in more legitimate film work. But behind it all, of course, there is mob involvement looking to exploit everything for the sake of milking maximum profit, if necessary via their standard strongarm tactics. And now, on top of all that, a killer has apparently arrived on the scene and is claiming victims for reasons unknown.
Because the blue movie makers can't afford to risk exposing their operation to a police investigation, they hire PI Joe Hannibal to try and find the killer and stop him or her before they can strike again. Before he can close the case, Hannibal experiences pain and pleasure like he's never known before and damn near loses his own life in the process.
Not for those easily offended by graphic portrayals of sex and violence, but otherwise highly recommended.
