Editorial Reviews

Review

Who among us wouldn't like to take a break from borders once in a while? In her first book, quilt designer and popular blogger Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts presents simple innovative quilt designs that have a fresh color palette and no borders! With a decade of quilting experience behind her and a good eye for color, Julie gives herself and others permission to break the rules. While some quilt designs need borders to look complete, others can stand strongly on their own, according to Julie. In Skip the Borders, she explores the structure of borderless quilts, what makes them work, how the binding affects the look, and how color can be used in bold ways to support the design. If you'd like to be free of borders, this is the book for you! --The Quilter Magazine

Julie Herman's appealing new book Skip The Borders might have you wondering "What's the big deal here? Just stop piecing early in the piecing process. ANY quilt can be made without borders, right?"

My own preconceptions changed when I read Herman's brief introduction. She explains why some quilt designs are better borderless candidates than others, and she concedes that some quilts are still going to look and function better with borders. She goes on to show how fabric/print choices, binding, block orientation, and block structure are key factors in effective quilts without borders.

Most of the blocks here are pretty basic and ideal for beginners and intermediate quilters: log cabin, variable star, running bricks, 4-patch, flying geese, and stacked strippy trianges. One design features applique circles using fusible web. My favorite quilt is "Raspberry Dessert", which to my eye looks like a cross between Card Trick and Courthouse Steps; the coloration is superb.

The smallest project is 39.5 inches square and the largest is 77 inches square. Each of the 15 projects are displayed with dynamic prints and lovely colorways. There are also many attractive quilting examples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners October 25, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am a beginner quilter but have loved quilts for years so have amassed a pretty big collection of quilt books. I finally decided to enlist the help of a professional quilter to teach me how to quilt. I brought over a few selection of my books, but out of all them, Skip The Borders was the best one to start with.

Pros:
- Beautiful photos showing the entire quilt and details for each quilt
- Clear and concise instructions
- Clear lists for cutting and fabric requirements
- Detailed graphics of how to lay out and piece the blocks together. This was the biggest selling point for me. Also, this makes it easy to make adjustments (i.e. I don't want to make a baby quilt, but a lap quilt, I can easily count the blocks in the graphics provided in the book rather than do all the math).

I'm already working on two quilts from the book. My instructor also really likes to the book. She teaches professionally at quilt centers in the city and has mentioned that students often get annoyed because you can usually only complete one beginner's project in a book. With this book, you can graduate to more complex projects, but there are many foundational techniques taught. It offers a variety of styles of quilts to learn different techniques, but appeals to the modern quilter in the selection of fabrics and colors. I plan to work my way through three or four more quilts in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really recommend this book! August 20, 2012

Julie Herman's blog has been my go to for quilting help. Her book is just as educational. They basic instructions are concise, easy to follow and just basic. I have seen many projects I am putting on my list to start soon. If you are a beginning quilter, Julie's book is the place to start. If you are a more knowledgeable quilter, her book will still provide projects that are fun to do. I, also, enjoyed the design theory she included. I would highly recommend this book.
