I've been a fan since seeing them in concert back in 2006 with Paramore and Cute Is What We Aim For. Always loved the loud guitars and energy this band brings but never got passed the New Found Glory similarities. Especially the vocals. On the previous album "This is a stick up...." I always thought it could have been better with a different and clearer (very deep nasal blockage??) lead vocals. Well here we have it. And honestly this album just made my summer. The heavy guitar intros and riffs are still there. The vocals have been taken over by the guitarist who makes the lyrics much clearer and adds identity to this band. The chorus are fun and every song ("statues" is still growing on me) is ultra catchy and sticks in your head. Every day I get a new favorite song from this album. Judge it how you may, (see track 11 "say what you wanna say") but if your a old fan of the band and this genre (cartel, Hawthorne heights, all time low, new found glory, paramore, set your goals, Valencia, hello goodbye.....) of music then its a definite must have for your summer and collection. If you're looking for something new then just have a listen in the previews or their myspace page. You will like what you hear!!

I just couldn't get into it,
This review is from: Skip School Start Fights (Audio CD)
Okay, for starters I'm a HUGE fan of pop punk music. Everything from Blink, to Green Day, to Simple Plan, and everything in between. While it's been a struggle for me to start accepting the "new" age of pop punk in bands like All Time Low, Boys Like Girls, Cute is What We Aim For and a number of others, I've grown a little of a liking to it. Hit The Lights unfortunately didn't grab me at all. I'm always willing to give any band a listen, but these guys just didn't have that special something to make me get into them. It just sounded like a straight forward rock record to me. Glad to see other people like these guys, I just wish I could have gotten into them.

A Solid Album,

After the ban lost Colin Ross, who provided a distinct sound on lead vocals, there had to be fears of a step back. However, Skip School, Start Fights is a solid album that is true to the bands old sound (that with Ross) but provides something new for their fans. The sound is fantastic and does not disappoint.
It is better to look at this album as a freshman, rather than a sophomore album. With the lineup shuffle the band has gone through this effort is nothing short of stellar. However, the album falls short of a 5 star rating for one main reason, compared to the wonderfully intelligent lyrical compositions of This is a Stick Up... Don't Make it a Murder the majority of the lyrics for Skip School, Start Fights are best described as good. The mix between great sound and good lyrics is certainly worth a listen and makes a great addition to any Pop-Punk, Punk, or Rock collection. All things considered the album is solid and speaks to a promising future for the band, even with the loss of Ross.

Back-to-school must-have CD!,

Despite the name of the name is called 'Skip School, Start Fights', it is not about getting you out of school. Hit The lights create a sound that vividly paints the image of a care-free sunny day, reminding you of summer that has now[considering that it's already Fall when I am writing this] passed by. Perfect for listening while you're driving or studying.

Sounds like a mixture of Cartel and Anberlin. If you like catchy emo-ish songs, this is bright, cheerful music and does not disappoint.

Great Album!,

I haven't been listening to Hit the Lights very long, but I love this album. I saw them last year on the Sassyback Tour with Cobra Starship and I really enjoyed them. This is a great album and definetly worth your time.

I have a confession to make; I have a soft spot for solid pop punk bands. In 2002 I was introduced to New Found Glory and I never looked back. I personally love the mixture of guitar riffs with high vocals, and that's pop punk for you wrapped up into a neatly packaged album.
Hit The Lights belongs with the greatest of this genre with the likes of New Found Glory and All Time Low. Their melodies are excellent and their background vocals flow well with the leading vocals. Combine this with solid lyrics and catchy riffs and you'll thoroughly enjoy their musical performance. `Skip School Start Fights', with guest appearances of members of All Time Low and Valencia, is flowing with energy. Listening to this album brings back memories of late night parties, drinking, hanging out with friends and staying up until morning. This album focuses on the pure vitality of it all. It's not malicious partying or partying in general but partying with good friends, the difference being that a party isn't determined by the quantity of people there but by the quality of the people. It's message in a bottle emphasizes that this is life at its finest, and since my days of partying are far from over this album resonates with my general outlook. Perhaps it's young and foolish but we live in a generation of making mistakes through first-hand experiences and sustaining a cafefree lifestyle for as long as possible. This album serves as our anthem, our rallying cry. As MxPx once said in 2000: "Responsibility, what's that?/ Responsibility, not quite yet" As Hit The Lights says in 2008: "Take me back to the place/ Where we were standing at the top/ When we were living everyday/ Like its the last one that we've got" Favorite Tracks: All of them. Seriously.

I was pleasantly surprised when I heard this album & Hit the Lights for the first time this past summer! The album is so upbeat and catchy, it made for a great summer favorite (and beyond) I'm going to their concert later this month.
I absolutely love almost every song on the album, but some of my favorites are among the less "popular": Don't Wait Hangs Em High Tell Me Where You Are On and On Count It Breathe In Give it a few listens, you will be hooked! |
