1. Check if conscious: "Are you OK?" 2. Check if person is breathing: look, listen, and feel. If not, have someone call 911 or hail the Coast Guard on a marine radio, channel 16. 3. Tilt back head, lift chin, pinch nose shut. 4. Give 2 slow breaths. Watch for chest to rise. 5. Check pulse for at least 10 seconds. If pulse present, but still not breathing, continue as follows: 6. Give 1 slow breath every 5 seconds. Do this for 1 minute. 7. Recheck pulse and breathing. 8. Continue cycle of breathing and checking pulse, for as long as possible or until help arrives.
If air does not go in (you do not see chest rise and fall) as you give breaths: 1. Retilt head back and try again. If this does not work: 2. Give up to 5 abdominal thrusts, then sweep mouth with finger. 3. Repeat rescue breathing from beginning.
