About Skirt Sports
"When you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you perform better."

This principle has guided Nicole DeBoom since she was on a training run in 2003, and decided women shouldn't have to sacrifice femininity for performance. Nicole soon created the first ever women's fitness skirt, turning heads as she raced to victory in the 2004 Ironman Wisconsin in her hand-sewn prototype, pioneering a new product category and giving birth to Skirt Sports.

Skirt Sports has grown into one of the leading women's fitness apparel brands, with a full collection of styles, from the market's first running skirts and dresses to performance tops, bottoms, outerwear, and accessories sold in more than 650 specialty retail stores throughout the U.S., Canada, and Australia. In 2007, DeBoom helped launch the fun, flirty Skirt Chaser 5K race series, and in 2011 created Kick Start, the first online running mentorship program that empowers seasoned runners with tools to help other women who want to become healthier through running.

Whether you're into running, walking, hiking, cycling, doing yoga, playing golf or tennis, and everything in between, Skirt Sports has you covered with fashionable fitness wear designed by women, for women.

This was my first running skirt, and I really loved it when I first bought it. It is a modest length, it's a nice weight for spring or fall, it has three pockets so I can put my GU and keys in separate pockets and not lose one when I try to take out the other, and it's quite inexpensive compared to other skirts on the market (if you buy one of the prints that are on sale). Now that I've been shopping around and trying out other skirts, though, this has become my least favorite skirt.

The my biggest problem with this skirt is the waistband. The manufacturer photos might lead you to believe that this skirt has a thick waistband because of the yoke around the top, but in fact the waistband consists of a thin piece of elastic about 1/2" (or 1.5 cm) thick where the shorts connect to the skirt part (if you look closely at the images for the black or the blue (lapis) skirts you can see what I mean -- the elastic ends about where the fabric folds just under the top of the skirt waist). It's not very flattering on someone who is not a model (me). More importantly, it feels extremely awkward when I'm wearing it because the outer skirt piece of fabric isn't attached to the TOP of the elastic waistband, it's sewn to to the BOTTOM of the elastic -- the skirt fabric flows up and over the elastic and then down to form the skirt. As a result, the waistband sort of folds over on itself sometimes, and other times the skirt fabric rides up higher than it probably should be on my stomach. It's a really bizarre fit.

My second gripe with this skirt is the shorts. They don't ride up, so that's great, but the fabric just isn't that comfortable. There's no elastic band at the bottom to keep them from riding up, instead the shorts are just tight.

I do not have a whole lot of experience in skort buying. This is the second skort I have ever purchased. I've tried on quite a few and never felt confident that they would stay put. They were usually too loose, or way too short. I suppose if I was very slender the short ones might have worked but that's just not what works for my body type.

So the top 3 things I looked for in a skort; the fit, staying power and practicality, and style.

To help describe how this skort fits I think it is useful to know what kind of body is wearing it.
I am 5'10" and 175 on a good day, and wear a 10 or 12 depending on clothing style or item. I am active but not firm bodied like I would like to be. This means I've got some working horse thighs on me and a little bit of a belly.

I bought the black in size LG and it fits perfect. The skirt and under shorts are definitely longer than most skorts I've come across. It falls mid thigh (about 4-5inches above my knees. For some this may not be a plus, but it my case I like the additional coverage. I think the length of the short is also what helps this skort stay in place. I did not find the length to be hindrance while running either.

Other reviews mentioned that it rode a bit low on the hips, and made for an unflattering look. I was worried about this as I have that belly I mentioned...but turns out it really is quite flattering. I don't know if I hiked it up higher...(I don't think so because I imagine that would cause some discomfort on my lady parts) but the skort hits just below my belly button. So above my hips but not in a mom-jeans high-waisted way. I guess more like boot cut jeans fit...mid rise. This is a comfortable fit for me, but understandably not the fit for every body type.

After trial (and expensive) error,...I finally found a running skirt that lives up to all that it promises. I've even bought from Athleta and those skirts, as cute and flattering as they are still cause chafing and the built-in shorts ride up.

I read the reviews for this brand but was still doubtful but ended up buying these as this would be my "last great hope" of ever being able to wear a running skirt without suffering from chafing thighs or constantly pulling the built-in shorts down & back in place to prevent said chafing. These did the trick! I've gotten so many compliments on the funky pattern on this and after just running the Austin LIVESTRONG 1/2 marathon in this with 20,000 other runners...I could spot myself easily in the crowd (from event photos) because I didn't see a single other runner wearing my skirt! I was able to put this skirt on, pull up a pair of leggings over the built-in shorts (& it still look figure flattering) to keep my legs warm until it was race time, easily shed off the extra layer of leggings without a need to change. This skirt stayed exactly in place the entire race. No chafing, no bike short legs riding up, no skirt waist riding up or falling down, the built-in shorts seem to be the perfect length to cover a good portion of the upper part of your legs to not only prevent chafing but to also not show off any of the upper thigh cellulite that some of us women worry about someone seeing and may stop some of us from ever considering running in a skirt. This shows just enough leg to make you look feminine, give you a "youthful" look but still allow you to still feel covered, comfortable and not so body-conscience that some skirts and leggings may leave you feeling.

From now on, if I'm going to invest in a sport skirt, this is the only brand I will trust. I can't wait to see what other patterns & styles will come out soon!
