Dungen's fourth studio album extends the acclaimed Swedish outfit's sound past psychedelia into something far more rare. Moving beyond mere stylistic concerns, 4 finds Gustav Ejstes' focus on the extremes of Dungen's sound separating into two entities. Blazing, raw guitar workouts have their own time and place, but now, so do stirringly orchestrated, jazz-cooled compositions ... Read more in Amazon's Dungen Store

Product Description

One of the most lasting and honorable imports of music hereabouts, Sweden's Dungen sweetly return with a collection of gorgeous rippers and graceful jazz filled polyrhythms called Skit I Allt out on Mexican Summer, September 14th. At ease with effervescent pop, third-eye popping psychedelia, heavy rock, spider-web folk and breezy jazz, Dungen's dynamism astounds throughout Skit I Allt .

Not everyone can transcend genre and stretch the definition of the rock song like Dungen. --Flaunt

"Skit I Allt" is more of Gustav Ejstes' Swedish vocals set over the classic rock sounds of the 1960s and 70s. 'Vara Snabb' is a great opener that is followed by 'Min Enda Vän,' a dreamy instrumental. While muscular power chords create a rockin' background texture, it is the flute that is the solo instrument. Harking back to King Crimson's earlier work, the flute is processed in a way that suggests a mellotron. 'Brallor' is a slower-paced ballad that incorporates symphonic elements. Anna Järvinen sang with the band on "4" and her vocal contribution here beautifully syncs with Ejstes. 'Högdalstoppen' moves with grace and beauty while injecting some fuzzy guitar work. The title track is actually the album's epic instrumental. Paying homage to Hendrix, this is a mind melting, six string spliff. 'Barnen Undrar' is another sweet ballad. The instrumentals are always half the fun with Dungen and 'Nästa Sommar' doesn't disappoint as the album's third jam. Here the piano and guitar dance in a psychedelic haze. Accented with a conga, 'Marken Låg Stilla' is a sentimental closer. If there's a criticism of "Skit I Allt," it's that there's nothing new here. In the end, more of the same is ultimately more of the same delicious ear candy. While it doesn't surpass "Ta Det Lugnt," this is on a similar plain with releases such as "Tio Bitar" and "Dungen." Listen to "Skit I Allt" and nostalgically rock forward.

Dungen - Skit I Allt (2010)

I first heard Dungen a few months ago on KUT, the local college radio station here in Austin. The piece they played was an extended, mind-blowing slice of far-out prog rock from what I recall. Hungry for more, I decided to pick up their latest album, SKIT I ALLT (which I've since discovered means "F... ALL"). Initially I was quite disappointed as this music wasn't really what I was hoping for. But I believe one should always listen to an album for what it is, not what you want it to be. With this in mind I continued to listen to the record and I approach this review in the same spirit.

SKIT I ALLT focuses quite a lot on pretty, simple arrangements featuring a prominent flute along with piano and sweetly sung lyrics (in Swedish). Heavier elements occasionally emerge: drums endlessly roll and crash at times, bass guitars rumble and distorted guitars add muscle and color in certain places. Track 5 in particular features guitars that launch into psychedelic overdrive and other interesting sonic textures.

I certainly don't recommend putting much stock in labels, but in an effort to describe this music, I would say it vaguely resembles Krautrock such as Can on occasion and it could loosely be considered prog rock with an emphasis on its prettier side although it's less complicated than prog tends to be. Others might call parts of this album "psych-pop" or even "easy listening," especially track 2.

Admittedly my appreciation for the album is limited by my ignorance of Swedish, although I have seen some of the lyrics which, appropriately, seem to espouse traditional hippie ideals such as freedom and doing what you want.
