2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing new in this book, and the author is weak as a military historian..., December 14, 2007

This review is from: Skorzeny: Hitler's Commando (Dorset Press Reprints) (Hardcover)
I say weak as a military historian because any author of a work on a military figure who, in their introduction, mentions David Stirling as the founder of the Long Range Desert Group in WW2 is more than a little suspect as to anything else they write. And that's indeed what this author does right at the start of this book. As a result of this mistake, this entire book loses credibility in my eyes. If you can't get that simple fact right (David Stirling founded the British SAS), what else has the author got wrong.

That said, this book was written in 1972 and seems to be a straightforward rehash of earlier accounts of Skorzeny's life and military activity's in WW2, followed by a summation of his post WW2 activities - involvement in ODESSA, helping SS fugitives escape, working for the Peron's in Argentina, recruiting scientists and military personnel for Egypt - nothing new, but this book supplies very little in the way of background to all of this - just rehashes what's been written in the past.

If you already have books on Skorzeny, there's nothing new here and it's not as well written as other books on the man. And as I said, the writer seems a little flakey on his military history.....To my mind, this book's not worth the money.
