Illmaculate (of Sandpeople) released his long awaited album "Skrill Talk" back on April 17th. There is a reason why I am so late with this review. Back on the original release date it was only available for digital download, but I asked Illmac and he informed me that physical copies were in the works. Me being the type of person who prefers physical cds, I waited... impatiently. Two days before I saw they were available I was thinking of saying screw it and getting the digital version, luckily when I went to buy it I lost my train of thought and wound up not making the purchase.
I feel "From Here" does a very good job of setting the overall tone of the album. When I first gave the alum a spin I was kind of taken of guard because I expected such a different sound after I heard "Rapper of the Year" "Under Their Radar, Over Their Heads" and "Territorial" The album has a very laid back sound that's very different from any Sandpeople release so far, but it works.
A lot of people think battle rappers can't make good albums, but I think Illmac showed them just how wrong they are. Production is provided by quite a few people including Trox, G_Force, Sapient (of Sandpeople) & Chase Moore. I felt majority of it was done well, but there were a few songs where I felt the productions was a little weak compared to the other tracks on the album. The subject matter ranges on this album. He talks about Portland, his love for music, his coming up, and then you have the usually tracks with him boasting.
I felt the album had a nice selection of guests. J-Rome makes his way on four of the songs and Illmac's right hand man OnlyOne finds himself on five. Then we have Wu-Tang vet Inspectah Deck on track seven "How You Do That" I thought that was a very surprising collaboration, but his style fit perfectly with Illmac and Only. Then Tech N9ne and Krizz Kaliko find themselves on track eleven "Go Study" Another collab I found surprising, but it worked out. I will say Kaliko sounded a little weird on here though. He sounded like he might have had a cold or something when he recorded the hook, he just seemed a little off to me.
The last thing I want to talk about is the crew track. Track fourteen "One More Time" features Gold, IAME, OnlyOne & Sapient. So not the entire Sandpeople crew, but it had half of them on there. One thing I look forward to the most on Sandpeople releases is the crew song. I don't know why, I guess I just love hearing them all on a track together. However I'm very indifferent towards this one. There were some listens where I loved it, and others where it irritated me. Most of the irritation came from the beat. I understand what Soleternity was trying to do when he produced the song, but the choppiness of the beat just didn't do the sample justice in my opinion. However, each MC came correct, and Sapient singing after his verse leaves you breathless.
Standout Songs: "How You Do That (Feat. OnlyOne & Inspectah Deck)" "Under Their Radar, Over Their Heads (Feat. J-Rome)" & "Nearsighted"
Overall Score: 8.5/10 - Is this album perfect? No. Was it worth the wait? Definitely. I've found myself listening to it almost every day since I gave it my first spin. There were a few songs that probably could've been left off, but none of them are terrible. Overall Illmac provides a smooth album that's bound to get your head noddin'.
