If you like loud, distorted, poppy, punk mixed with oddball samples, buy this album. Even if you don't like it, buy it anyway and play it for your friends and you will seem very hip and cool. They sing into telephones while they play live, for crying out loud!

In my eyes, Japanther can do no wrong. If I were in high school, still had an edge of teen angst, I would listen to these guys non-stop.

I been listening to them and goin to shows since 02 or 03 and the only thing better than a Japanther album, is a Japanther show. You get the album listen to it and you know which songs will kick arse the next time they are in town. I never seen a crowd go ballistic like they did when $100 cover came up and I seen tons of underground punk band. Most I can't remember. I was traveling around in Dunedin, New Zealand and feeling a bit homesick after being on vacation for 10 months when I found this album in a cd shop. I never would have thought I'd find it there. It lifted me out of the funk and provided the perfect music for all the manual labor I did while traveling. They are The Ramones of the 21st century. Like the Ramones, the album's short. Maybe 30 minutes, but it's their most cohesive and accomplished album. Dump the body in Rikki Lake is still my favorite.

They...they just keep releasing things....,

If you already know Japanther, then you probably know what to expect and Skuffed Up Huffy is more of the same. I don't know about you, but I love it and I don't care if they keep releasing two or three albums a year of the same poppy punk mess. I cannot get enough of it. Japanther sounds like what I imagine the Ramones would if they had grown up listening to hip-hop (and themselves...I guess...)Most of the tracks are typical songs, with only one instrumental freakout plus one rereleased song (Mornings) which I appreciate. I enjoyed, Dump the Body.., and Yer Living Grave and Wolfenswan, but they felt like they were just thrown together at the last minute: like they brought a recorder into a practice session, broke it up into tracks and then released it. Any idea they had, they put out. Compared to that, "Huffy" is much more cohesive and more fun all around, and it has their best song yet, in my opinion: $100 Cover. I would tell you to get it just for that song. |
