Works fine, great alternative to Microsoft products,
This review is from: Skullcandy SMLWBX-34 Lowrider Gaming Headset for Xbox 360 (Electronics)
I am very pleased with these headphones. The gameplay sound quality is excellent. I am hearing things in games like Gears of War 2 and Fallout 3 that I had never heard before. Most ambient noise is kept out, so all you hear is the game audio. Another bonus is that I can turn the television volume to zero and turn my headphones up so that late at night my family can sleep and I can still hear my games. The first day I used this headset, my friends immediately commented on the improvement in voice quality that they could hear.My only complaint with this headset is that there is no Mute button (at least, not that I have found yet). If you want a good alternative to the Microsoft products, and if you want stereo game audio combined with chat, this is a good option. Regarding the negative reviews: Every single negative comment that I have read about this headset I experienced, too, all on the first night I used the headset. No chat functionality, no instructions, overly loud game audio or inaudible chat audio... I experienced it all in my first hour with this headset... So I got off my rear and went to the computer, pulled up the Skullcandy website, and found answers to all of my questions. There are instructions on how to make this headset function properly, as well as a connection blueprint. Furthermore, the XBox 360 owner's guide explains how to adjust volume levels on the XBox and XBox Live. And most games have their own volume levels to work with. After 10 minutes on the computer, I had the settings for my headset tuned in precisely. In closing, this is a good headset, and I recommend it. Regarding the negative reviews: If you are intelligent enough to post a review on Amazon.com, you should be intelligent enough to visit the manufacturer's website and read how to use their product.

Using their birthday money, my two sons each purchased a Skullcandy headset which, out of the box, did not function as expected. The following instructions, at the time of this writing, restored functionality.Xbox and Xbox LIVE settings for LOWRIDERS for Xbox 360 headphones Xbox 360 Settings 1. On the Xbox (not Xbox LIVE) go to dashboard "System Settings" and press "A" button on your controller. 2. Scroll down to "Console Settings" and press "A" again. 3. Select "Audio" then "Digital Output", pressing the "A" button to view each menu, and change the setting from "Dolby" to "Dolby Digital with WMA Pro." Xbox LIVE Settings 1. From the Xbox 360 Dashboard, press the Xbox Guide button to access your Xbox LIVE Settings. 2. Navigate to the Settings selection, and press the "A" button on your controller. 3. Select "Preferences" from the menu that follows and press "A". 4. Once in the Preferences menu select "Voice" and press "A" again. 5. On the "Voice" screen, make sure the "Play Through Both" radial is selected for the Voice Output selection and that the volume is set to "10". I hope you find this helpful; my boys were very relieved to find their birthday money was not squandered!

Sounds Great but Doesn't Work,
This review is from: Skullcandy SMLWBX-34 Lowrider Gaming Headset for Xbox 360 (Electronics)
I bought this Mic/Headset thinking that it would be nice to have the game sound and voice all in one. I do a lot of late night gaming, and with a pregnant wife and a 3 year old, keeping things quite is key.Let me start out by saying the game sound is fantastic. I sit about 8 feet away from my TV and the wire reached fine. There wasn't much slack, but once you get situated, it wasn't an issue. You could hear everything beautifully in games such as Battlefield, or GTA. The issue comes in with voice chat. Firstly, there are no instructions in the package, so if you don't have your voice setting turned to both (speaker and headset), you won't hear anything, or have any idea why. Secondly, you can't hear the voices over the games. In the dashboard you can hear everything fine, although it's a little quiet. During a game however, with explosions and general game noise the voice chat is so quiet you can't hear. On most games you can turn the audio down from the game options to even everything out. But on those games that you can't, such as Too Human, you are stuck. Lastly, there is no Mic mute option, or the ability to turn up the voice volume without also turning up all sounds from the game. So I leave disappointed. But, at least I know what not to recommend in the future.

I am not a big review writer but after reading the first review I felt that it was needed. I bought two of these, one for myself and one for my son. We use them to do exactly what the first reviewer says can not be done. I mix the audio of the game with the audio of the voice chat all the time. I also like it better than Turtle Beach Ear Force X1 because the Amplifier on the Skullcandy is driven by battery, the Turtle Beach has to be plugged into a USB port. The Turtle Beach also had three wires going to it and is in my opinion kind of ugly.

Nice alternative,

I originally considered the Turtle Beach Ear Force X1 headphones. That was until I found out that the plug that connects to the controller will not work with the Messenger Chatpad. The Skullcandy headphones were basically the only ones I could find that would work. They're standard 3.5mm stereo headphones with a 2.5mm microphone plug. The package does not include installation instructions, but if you look on Skullcandy[...] they have them. Basically you connect headphone jack to the included extension cable. This cable has the red & white RCA connector that plugs into the back of the TV and also has the plug that accepts the same cables from the Xbox. This allows the game & chat audio to be sent to the headphones when its connected, but works normal when the 3.5mm plug is disconnected. Next, plug the microphone cable into the controller or chatpad if connected. The microphone does not output through the headset unless you have the Xbox Guide personal settings selected to "Output Through Speakers(or Both)". A couple of drawbacks include: 1) no mic mute switch, but it does include an in-line volume knob 2) It doesn't seem to amplify the audio directly from TV/Xbox. So it might not get loud enough for some if you don't own surround sound receiver. 3) It might hurt your ears after long periods of use if you happen to have a larger than normal head. ;) Other than those few minor issues, they work as advertise and cost about the same Turtle Beach ones. I like them, but if hadn't been for the lack of Chatpad support, I might have bought them instead. Send me a message on Live if you want to hear how they sound or need more details. Some people have given this product decent to bad reviews, they are the ones who didn't know how to set it up. really its not hard to do. Once installed they really are amazing for sound quality. They plug into the TV, which I thought would suck, BUT the wires are son long that its really no big deal. The fit perfectly over my giant head and are adjustable for (almost)anyone else. The sound helped my wife sleep through the night as I played ODST all night long. Really a great buy, there is also a little adjuster for the sound level in your ear if its too loud for you. Would recommend to any one of my Halo 3 ODST peeps who dont want to disturb their better halves.

Great Gaming Headset For The Xbox,
This review is from: Skullcandy SMLWBX-34 Lowrider Gaming Headset for Xbox 360 (Electronics)
I have been very happy with the purchase of this headset. The audio is crystal clear and I'm not sure if it has noise reduction but it totally cuts out all the background noise my previous headset had. This is great for playing games that have in game chat. The mic picks up my voice and my voice only, so the mic is really good on this headset also. SkullcandySMLWBX-34 Lowrider SGS 360 Boom Mic for Xbox Is a great priced headset that will give you great sound while being comfortable on your head and wallet. I would recommend this to everyone, Once you try them I'm sure you'll agree too!

Great headset for those on a budget,

This review is from: Skullcandy SMLWBX-34 Lowrider Gaming Headset for Xbox 360 (Electronics)
I gave this headset a perfect score because it rocks! Most of what I want to say has been covered so I'll let my rating do the talking but I'll hit some highlights. 1. Price: For the money this is a GREAT buy for the gamer looking to upgrade from the standard headset that is issued by Microsoft. It does not cost that much more (30 bucks or so when I picked them up) and the sound is many times better. 2. HDMI: The description says that it is not HDMI comparable, but don't let that stop you. All that means is the adapter cable they give you does not work with the HDMI cables. It is designed to go between the xbox and TV/audio equipment. All I had to do was hook the headset portion into my headphone jack on my tv (or you could make pretty much any audio out hook up work) and then the mic lead into the xbox controller (which is what you have to do anyway.) I did have to use an extension for the headset but I had one already and if you don't you can pick one up for cheap at you local electronics store. The last thing I'll hit is the ever popular gripe point of the hook up diagram. For one it isn't hard to figure out and if you can hook up your tv and xbox you can figure it out. If you do need help (I did but ended up figuring it out on my own because of the HDMI thing) it will take you 15 minutes with the search engine of your choice to find it (or just swing by skullcandy's site they have one.

Works, but not like a headset should,
By Mike R "bumblebeetuba" (Southern California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Skullcandy SMLWBX-34 Lowrider Gaming Headset for Xbox 360 (Electronics)
Ok, yes i know how these are supposed to be correctly wired and configured on Xbox. These things I have done, yes. however, having to hook up headphones to my TV defeats the purpose of having a wireless controller. if I and my controller are tethered to the TV by a cable, then I'm not wireless. Once I gave in just to see how they sounded, I agreed with many of the reviewers prior that it is still hard to hear and be heard as the game volume is just too much. This would be a one-star rating, except these headphones are way comfortable. Other that that, I am perfectly happy with a lame Xbox360 standard wireless headset. Buy these if you dont care about in game audio/chat that much, and do not buy them if you want to maintain wireless capability.
