5.0 out of 5 stars Hands down your best bet in this price range - PS4 November 18, 2013
Color Name:Black
It looks like the Astro/Skullcandy marriage is producing talented children. These things are the best gaming headphones that I have ever used. Granted, I haven't tried the Astro A50's which I hear are the best. But I have used Tritons and Turtle Beaches in roughly the same cost and feature category as the PLYR 1's. The sound quality on the Tritons was similar, but the build quality was lacking. They just didn't hold up. The TB's didn't measure up in either category.

The PLYR 1's are very comfortable. Though I will mention that the earcups are smaller than normal. They fit my average size ears, but if you have big ears they might not be as comfortable. Then again, the memory foam and soft material make me think that there wouldn't be an uncomfortable position. They were a little tight fighting out of the box. I worried that they wouldn't be comfortable, but the cups are so soft that it never bothered me. After a couple of weeks, they are broken in and no longer feel too tight.

The simulated Dolby 7.1 really does help in FPS games. And the optical audio pass through is great for connecting the audio to my home theater system when I don't want to use the headset when watching a movie or whatever. Highly recommended.

Edit: I am now using these on my PS4, and they work great. Plug and play. They worked fine on my PS3 as well, and they should work on PC, Xbox 360, or Xbox One.

i gave 5-stars because this is a very good headset in terms of value especially with the newly adjusted price drop (to $129 as of Jan 9, 2014). Know that Skullcandy acquired AstroGaming which make top-of-the-line gaming headsets in the A40 and A50, but are more expensive (albeit better quality) headsets. This review is based on PS3 and PS4 setups only (do not have PC or XBox so cannot comment on those platforms):

Pros: 7.1 dolby surround sound allows to locate enemies in FPS pretty well. 3 preset modes can tailor to your liking in terms of equalization. pretty comfortable (but i do not have big ears so those that mention the earcups are too small for big ears may have a point) even after long (3+hour gaming sessions). Battery life is quite long - easily 8-10+ hours on one charge. Receiver connects to PS3 or PS4 via USB and game audio is via digital optical. Will need to go into your sound and accessory settings via PS3 or 4 menu to choose Skullcandy headset and mic. Quick tip: if you use voicechat, raise your mic input level to the maximum setting (max = 5 in PS3) (see cons). Can charge headset via any miniUSB cable (can do this with a cable included into your receiver or via any microUSB charger). Cool design, plastic materials but well-constructed - appears pretty durable with normal use.

Cons: Mic level is pretty low. friends will say that cannot hear you well so you should raise the mic level just to be barely heard. agree that earcups could be a little bigger to accommodate larger ears/heads. analog stick for volume levels for game and voicechat is awkward to use and somewhat unreliable (would not attempt to adjust in-game, it will screw you up).

Overall, for $130 it is a GREAT deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sounds and feels great. Works for PS4. December 23, 2013
Color Name:Black|Verified Purchase
This headset is lightweight and very comfortable. The sound is on par with other headsets, but what puts this ahead of others is the feel of them. I use these with my PS4, no extra cables needed. Just hook the digital optical cable to the back of the console and the other end to the stand's optical in port. Go to settings, audio, and change output to digital optical, leave on Linear PCM, and choose dolby digital. Quick and easy setup. I will buy Skullcandy from now on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the competition January 28, 2014

I'm pretty picky when it comes to headsets and sound quality. Prior to buying the Skullcandy PLYR1s, I bought the PDP Afterglows and the Turtle Beach XP510s. Each of these 3 headsets has their own ups and downs, but I chose to keep the Skullcandy PLYR1s and return the others. I'll do a quick breakdown of each of them:

PDP Afterglow wireless (~$100):
+ Great sound quality: awesome bass, good volume range, good mids and highs. I loved the sound of this headset
- No surround sound: you can tell if the sound is coming from the left or the right, but it is significantly harder to pinpoint where the sound is coming from compared to a Dolby Surround sound headset
- EXTREMELY uncomfortable: The headset squeezes your head so hard I couldn't play more than 20 minutes without a huge headache and ear pain.
- Nowhere to keep the headset when not in use. Similar headsets have a built in holder on the tower.
- Lights are always on, even when the headset is not on or in use. The blue lights stay on when charging. Can be quite annoying and is a huge waste of electricity.

Turtle Beach XP510s (~$220)
+ Very lightweight and comfortable to wear. I could play all day with these on and not have a headache.
+ Very clear sound, it was very easy to pinpoint where sounds were coming from. Great mids and highs.
- Terrible, terrible bass. Almost non-existant. Very disappointing, as I am a huge fan of those rumbling lows while playing a game or watching a movie
- Not a large volume range. When these were at max volume, they were only about 2/3 as loud as the Skullcandys.
+ bluetooth to connect to phone. I wanted to use these to listen to music, which did work, but was not worth it in the slightest.
