Book Description

March 7, 2007

Sky Blue and Black explores the mysterious connection between seemingly unrelated events while examining everyday life in the United States in the months before September 11, 2001. Author Robert B. Murdoch weaves strands of historical and fictional events to create a vivid tapestry of American life that depicts issues of chance versus fate, life and death, hope and sorrow, and love and loss.

Told chronologically, Sky Blue and Black portrays the prosaic lives of several families in New Jersey and northeastern Ohio. It traces Al Qaeda terrorist Mohammed Atta’s final months in the U.S. as he prepares for the attacks on the World Trade Center, while simultaneously following a serial killer in northeastern Ohio, who stalks and kills one person a month, taking a memento from each body to include in his gruesome scrapbook of death. Among the killer’s victims is Chandra Levy, the missing intern whose disappearance is the story of the summer until the horrific attacks on 9/11. Meanwhile, the families live typical suburban American lives, unaware of how the ordinary events of the passing months will connect them in a most extraordinary manner to the tragedy about to unfold on a crisp, blue autumn morning.

A detailed and compelling story of American life, Sky Blue and Black captures the humor, tedium, and hope that make up our everyday existence. As the dramatic events of September 11th unfold, the lives of the various characters finally intersect on that fateful morning—and none of them knows who will live or die.

5.0 out of 5 stars HIghly recommended, great read even the 2nd and 3rd time, July 17, 2007
This review is from: Sky Blue and Black (Paperback)
The imagery and interesting weave of everyday life to catastrophic events is thought provoking! The author captures a perfect glimpse in to any neighborhood in any city. That's life, slow, steady, filled with lively moments that are special to those involved. Then BANG, along comes this global life changing event and things can never be the same, or can they? Along with that you have a serial killer running around picking people off one at a time with unique habits, one of which still keeps me up at night if I think about it. Enjoyed the book throughly and will read again and again to catch more details.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth It, July 3, 2007

I found it to be a very fascinating idea to have the book begin months before 9/11 in everyday suburbia. I thoroughly enjoyed the building of the story told on a month-to-month basis. The author has also incorported "headlines" from the news monthly, (through the serial killer character) which I loved. All the characters, including the beloved dogs, have such a connection. It has all the elements of a great page turner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!, May 31, 2007

Loved how this book twisted and turned! Following the close knit relationships of good neighbors, and how they are a type of "family" with you. It was so fun how the book went from different families in the neighborhood, then following a serial killer, then a terrorist and pulling in family from New York from one of the neighbors...it all ties together in the last chapter when our whole country feels the pain of September 11. I haven't cried like that while reading a book in a long time...great story...sad ending, but the epilog leaves you with the hope and knowledge that life does go on.
